Recap / Skull Island (2023) S1 E8 "You'll Never Catch a Monkey That Way"

Go To

Tropes:

  • Bolivian Army Cliffhanger: The episode leaves it ambiguous what happened to Mike (who was poisoned), Charlie (who was attacked by a vengeful Iwi for endangering Kong), or Dog (who was last seen being swept away by a huge wave). Two weeks later, Annie wakes up in a hospital, now in Irene's custody again.
  • Caught in a Snare: After leaving Dog and Annie, Mike tries to make his way back to the camp on foot but is caught in a snare set by the Iwi.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Kong uses one half of Cap's ship, which the Kraken sunk back in episode 1, as a weapon against the beast.
  • Dies Wide Open: The Kraken's remaining eyes are open and blank on its upper-body after Kong kills it.
  • Dramatic Irony: Annie and Dog steal Kong's Tragic Keepsake and run off with it, enraging him into pursuing them into the Kraken's territory, but based on his placid first reaction to them in his lair and what the viewer already knows of Kong beforehand — if not from the wider MonsterVerse's materials, then from the preceding Kong-centered Whole Episode Flashback — it's heavily implied that Kong would have helped the humans out if they'd merely asked him instead of antagonizing him and baiting him into a fight.
  • Eye Scream: Kong stabs out the Kraken's right pair of eyes with a shipwreck. The Kraken in turn lashes Kong across the eye with a tentacle hard enough to make it bleed and swell it shut, although Kong's appearances in MonsterVerse instalments set after the series indicate his eye will recover.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Despite the grossly personal burglary Annie and Dog committed against Kong and despite them luring him into the Kraken's territory, Kong intervenes to save their lives when he's reminded of his bond with the late Island Girl. That being said, Kong still levels a stern gaze at them after the act.
  • Futile Hand Reach: Annie reaches out her arm towards Dog when the latter is caught in the tides and at risk of drowning, though it's physically useless since there's several meters between them.
  • Homefield Advantage: The Kraken, being a sea creature, has a huge advantage over the land dwelling Kong when they battle in the ocean. Subverted in that it's ultimately not enough to tip the scales in its favor, and Kong ends up the winner of their battle.
  • Improvised Weapon: Kong uses half of a sunken boat to stab the Kraken, and Mike uses a flare gun as an offensive weapon against a giant centipede in a call-back to Mason Weaver's actions.
  • Internal Reveal: Charlie discovers in short order what the avid MonsterVerse fan has known all along: (A) Skull Island's natives speak Englishnote , (B) the giant gorilla who's been popping up throughout the series is called Kong, and (C) the natives don't appreciate the gorilla in question being endangered one bit.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: An example that does not involve an injury; when Annie and Charlie are fleeing from Kong on Dog, Charlie realizes Dog won't make it since he's not used to carrying two people and voluntarily jumps off him.
  • Mythology Gag: The episode title is taken from Son Of Kong and was said by Carl Denham to female lead Hilda when she was trying to get her circus monkeys back.
  • Not Quite Dead: After a severe beating by Kong, the Kraken seems done for. But then it reveals itself to be still alive and makes a final attempt to get Dog and Annie, prompting Kong to rip the beast in half.
  • Primal Chest-Pound: Kong pounds his chest during his Victorious Roar, while standing at the top of a giant boulder no less.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After hearing Charlie's plan to get Kong to fight the Kraken, Irene suggests they could also make their way to the other side of the island and have a helicopter pick them up there. Charlie however, points out that there's no guarantee the Kraken won't follow them there considering it clearly enjoys tormenting the humans, and even if this plan works it will be too late for Mike by then.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: While it's obvious Kong hates the Kraken, it is also clear that he's not stupid enough to try and attack the beast in the ocean, so Charlie, Annie and Dog have to lure him to the sea by stealing the necklace of Kong's fallen human friend.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's uncertain whether or not the Rock Bug that Kong throws at the Kraken survives being violently slapped out of its trajectory by the Kraken's tentacle, and falling into the sea a good distance by the Rock Bug's standards away from the shore.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Not that the Kraken was playing nice to begin with, but it starts the fight with Kong striking in a patient, composed and cunning manner as it attempts to defeat him. After Kong stabs out the Kraken's eyes and escapes its attempt to drown him, when the monster resurfaces, it howls in rage and it starts all-out attacking Kong with its limbs in a mad frenzy.
