Recap / Scrubs S 1 E 5 My Two Dads

Go To

JD and Eliot have a young patient doing a Make-a-Wish... who wants to see boobs. JD finds himself at the center of a conflict between his Cynical Mentors, Cox and Kelso, over how to properly practice medicine, including whether JD should help Cox break the law to help a patient get health care without insurance. Turk gets Carla a meaningful gift in order to prove this is a real relationship, rather than just a booty call.

Tropes:

  • All Men Are Perverts: JD's first Imagine Spot is a Family Feud bit where all men want to see boobs.
Host: What do all men want to see?
    Boobs 93
    The Rock 4
    Beer Sandwiches 2
    World Peace 1
    • Subverted when Carla objects that Turk doesn't stare at her ass as she walks out of the room.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Why is this scheduled procedure unnecessary, Dr. Stedman? Because the patient is dead.
  • Butt-Monkey: Stedman is presented as an ass-kissing loser, then gets repeatedly (and accidentally) physically abused on the golf course.
  • The Cameo: Louie Anderson, who was hosting Family Feud at the time, appears in JD's Family Feud Imagine Spot.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Eliot is drop down drunk after almost one beer.
  • Cynical Mentor: Again, Cox and Kelso both play this for JD.
  • Her Boyfriend's Jacket: Carla goes into Turk's room to borrow his sweatshirt.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: It's implied, through JD's Imagine Spot, that Cox deliberately took the fall in order to teach JD a lesson. At the very least, that's how JD imagines it.
  • It's Personal: Cox only plays golf with Kelso because he loves being able to kick the old man's ass week after week.
  • Opposed Mentors: JD finds himself stuck in the middle of a golf match between Cox and Kelso. They both care about the patients, but they have very, very different opinions about medicine as a business and a practice. It's very frustrating for him to play 18 holes with the angel and the devil constantly whispering in his ears. JD even has an Imagine Spot with Cox as Obi-Wan fighting Kelso as Vader with himself as Luke. Faced with the decision, JD chooses Cox.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Cox ordered a procedure for a dead patient with great health insurance in order to have it done on a patient with no health insurance, even though that's illegal. JD ultimately opts to follow in his footsteps.
  • Secret Test of Character: Cox asks for JD's help breaking the law to help a patient. When JD goes along, Cox responds:
Cox: What, are you kidding? That's way too big of a risk for a peon. I just wanted to see what team you were playing for.
  • Snooty Sports: Kelso invites JD to a game of golf. Turns out Stedman also plays... and Cox.
  • Verbal Tic: This marks the first time that Dr. Cox stretches out the word "really" by adding an "H", to making it "re-heally".
  • What You Are in the Dark: Turk rushes to Carla to tell her that the thoughtful, kind gift he gave her came from the Ass Box, but can't go through with it because she's so happy. Then he comes home and she greets him with lingerie... and he tells the truth. She initially sounds like she's upset, but when he doubles down on honesty, she rewards him with the daily, the nightly, the ever so rightly that robs him of all his up and downs.
  • You Are Too Late: JD offers to help Cox, only for Cox to reveal he already did the thing.
