Recap / Samurai Rabbit The Usagi Chronicles S 1 E 2 Yokai

Go To

Yuichi and his newfound companions Chizu, Kitsune and Gen battle with the yokai Kagehito. After the villain manages to flee, Yuichi finds himself arrested by the authorities for his numerous mess-ups in the previous episode. To make a bad situation worse, Yuichi learns that his ancestor Miyamoto is infamous as history's worst traitor in Neo Edo.

Tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: The episode ends with Yuichi's team charging into a museum to take out the yokai wreaking havoc within it.
  • Blatant Lies: Gen and Chizu both vehemently deny having come to the keisatsu station to rescue Yuichi. Kitsune sees through it in an instant, since she came there to do the same.
  • Blood Knight: Karasu-Tengu is thrilled when she realizes that Yuichi is actually a competent fighter and she'll have to put in an effort for once.
  • Clear Their Name: After breaking out of his funk, Yuichi vows to restore Miyamoto Usagi's name.
  • Dark Action Girl: Karasu Tengu, a yokai known for being the master of all martial arts.
  • Cassandra Truth: One of the guards tries to direct Lord Kogane's attention to the multiple yokai attacks reported all over Neo Edo, but is promptly brushed off as "stupid" for believing in yokai.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The yo-yo Yuichi accidentally chooses as his mystic yokai-hunting weapon. It seems like just a useless toy at first, but turns out to be insanely useful later on, thanks to its inherent ability to extend seemingly indefinitely and its magnetism.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Gen, Chizu and Kitsune try to act indifferent about Yuichi's arrest, reasoning that the rabbit probably won't be in jail forever. Nevertheless, they almost immediately set off to help him after saying that.
  • Gaia's Revenge: Of the Gaia's Avenger category. Karasu Tengu hates that so many trees were cut down to build Neo Edo, so she comes after Neo Edo's current ruler, Lord Kogane, for revenge.
  • Identical Grandson: Subverted. Like Kagehito before her, Karasu-Tengu mistakes Yuichi for Miyamoto upon first seeing him. But when she takes a closer look, she quickly apologizes and says that he's very clearly a totally different rabbit.
  • Jerkass: The unnamed prison guard may as well be the poster boy for this trope. He's a smug, condescending douchebag who freely admits that he enjoys making people's day worse and spends his entire time on-screen mocking and anatgonizing Yuichi.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: The prison guard freely admits to Yuichi that it brings him joy to do this. He goes on to demonstrate by gleefully rubbing Yuichi's failures in his face and telling him about Miyamoto supposedly assassinating the shogun years ago, just to shatter Yuichi's ideal vision of his famous ancestor even more.
  • Pet the Dog: Karasu-Tengu gives Spot a treat before leaving.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Karasu-Tengu hates Neo Edo because building it required cutting down countless trees. She decides to kill Lord Kogane to avenge nature, since he's Neo Edo's current ruler.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When Karasu Tengu comes for Lord Kogane, his remaining keisatsu collectively decide he's not worth it and flee.
  • Slave to PR: Lord Kogane is obssessed with making himself look good to the public, going as far as to host a spontaneous photo-op while arresting Yuichi.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Lord Kogane still tries to arrest Yuichi's group after they save his life. He only changes his mind when it becomes clear Karasu Tengu isn't the only yokai left in the city and that he needs Yuichi and friends to contain the threat.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left:
    • Kagehito decides a mere descendant of Miyamoto Usagi isn't worth his time and flees to fulfill his oath.
    • Karasu-Tengu similarly decides to call it a day after fighting Yuichi's group, but promises this isn't the last they'll see of her.
  • Worthy Opponent: Karasu-Tengu acknowledges Yuichi as this, as even when cuffed, he matches her pretty much blow for blow.
