Recap / SWATS 02 E 16 Pride

Go To

Incited by a right-wing talk radio host, a man runs down two LGBT+ men at a Pride event. Later, in revenge an angry LGBT+ man storms the radio station and demands the host stop broadcasting, holding him as a hostage with his crew. After he's arrested, a sniper shoots him. The original attacker however is still out there, and planning a much larger attack while the team scrambles to stop it (with Chris getting some flack from her LGBT+ friends). Meanwhile, Deac is struggling with money issues since his baby needs an operation.

Examples:

  • Da Chief: Hicks gets to show how he got the job of S.W.A.T. Commander, dropping the last of the attackers on the Pride rally.
  • Double-Meaning Title: It indicates both the LGBT+ Pride event that gets targeted, and also Deac's pride that prevents him asking for help with his financial woes.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: The radio host rants against LGBT+ acceptance in LA, in particular having tax-funded Pride events. Some of his listeners take this further, running down a couple men and planning to do this with far more.
  • Homophobic Hate Crime: In the opener, a man runs down two LGBT+ guys who he encounters with his car. Then he murders another in police custody. At the end, he and others attack the large LA Pride event in trucks.
  • Loan Shark: Deac gets a loan from a former one who went straight and now gives out legal loans (though they're very similar), to pay for an operation that his daughter needs. He gets it off the books however, and the result is much the same.
  • Punny Name: Straight Shooters, a group of LGBT+ people who advocate gun ownership and train with firearms for self-defense against bias attacks. This becomes much less funny when one member storms a radio station and holds the host hostage, whom he blames for inciting anti-LGBT+ violence.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Hondo chews out the anti-LGBT+ radio host Mark Storm, saying though he's always careful never to explicitly promote violence against them, he knows some of his listeners want that, and toes the line to avoid responsibility for any crimes they commit.
Storm: Dennis calls into the show once a week. He's popular. So what? I didn't tell him to do what he did.
Hondo: No, of course not. You never tell anyone to do anything, not directly. You know exactly where the line is and how to fire up your listeners without crossing it. But don't you stand here and try to pretend like you don't know what your actions inspire.
Storm: I'm passionate... all right, but I'm not violent.
Hondo: Words have meaning. And you knew exactly what you were doing when you picked yours, and now someone is dead. Do you want to be responsible for more?
  • They Really Do Love Each Other: Commander Hicks and his son J.P. It's implied they had a falling out around the time J.P's mother died, and Hicks admits he wasn't the best of fathers but it's clear they do care about each other, as Hicks is clearly relieved to find his son safe in the wake of the final attack on the Pride rally.
  • Western Terrorists: A group of violently anti-LGBT+ right-wingers attack a Pride event using trucks.
