Recap / Ridonculous Race Last Tango In Buenos Aires

Go To

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, the four remaining teams must successfully learn and perform a tango, and then go on to catch an emu on horseback before heading to the Chill Zone. Devin's pursuit of Carrie's affections reaches its final stage, and another team makes an unexpected return.

Tropes:

  • Arc Fatigue: The dragging out of Carrie and Devin's romance plot is acknowledged by MacArthur in-universe, evidenced by this quote:
MacArthur: (to Devin) Yeah, yeah, the kiss! We get it, it's about time! Just do it already!
  • Artistic License – Geography: Two examples of them (like in the Russia episode):
    • Buenos Aires is located on the coast, and not on the foothills of the Andes Mountain Range like Don says.
    • There are no known Emus in Argentina. There are however Rheas, a close relative of both Emus and Ostriches.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Kitty arranges for the Ice Dancers and Police Cadets' airplane seats to be at the very back, where the lavatory is.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Devin and Carrie have one after Devin admits his feelings to her.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Surfer Dudes make a return here after the Best Friends got eliminated and were allowed to bring another team back to replace them.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Devin and Carrie finally hook up before they're eliminated.
  • Foreshadowing: Don is very excited and enthusiastic when announcing the Ice Dancers finish in first place, despite having shown annoyance with them in previous episodes, including wishing they would lose already in just last episode. This hints at the reveal that this is actually a non-elimination leg.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: After greasing up the Sisters' emu, Jacques constantly finds himself slipping off his horse since he's covered in grease himself.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Devin accidentally drops Carrie during the dance, MacArthur snarks about injuring a partner, until Sanders (arm still in cast) glares at her.
    • Shorty afterwards Devin says he bets no one has ever had as much trouble telling their best friend they're in love with them. Ironically Carrie has had that issue for the majority of the race.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Emma didn't mean to offend the emu when she said it smelt like expired cheese. She was just stating a fact.
  • Karma Houdini: Kitty tells karma that they have missed Jacques and Josee off of their "karma list".
  • Karmic Jackpot: After sparing Carrie and Devin in Vietnam, Geoff and Brody are welcomed back to the show to replace them after Devin sustained serious injuries, courtesy of the Ice Dancers' sabotage on Kitty and Emma.
  • Lampshade Hanging: MacArthur acknowledges how long the show has dragged out Devin and Carrie's romantic plot, telling Devin to just kiss her already.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Zig zagged. Jacques needing to sacrifice his hairdo so he can get rid of the oil in his hands is a direct consequence of covering the Sisters' emu with oil in the first place, but in the end, the Ice Dancers still earn first place. However, this victory and Jacques getting his hair covered in oil is rendered ultimately meaningless when Don reveals that this was a non-elimination leg and that the Sisters won't be eliminated despite the Ice Dancers' scheming.
    • When Josee says messing with the Sisters' emu was payback for their seats on the plane, Kitty retorts that that was karma and more is on the way eventually.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kitty over accidentally knocking Devin off the cliff.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Devin’s injuries force the Best Friends to forfeit the show.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Despite his hatred towards them, Don acted happy when the Ice Dancers came in first. Though this does make sense when it is revealed to be a non-elimination leg and he was just being a Large Ham for the camera.
  • Pet the Dog: Emma consoling Kitty that Devin getting knocked off the cliff wasn't technically her fault.
  • Plot Hole: Why weren't the Ice Dancers penalized for the fact that Jacques didn't catch his emu on horseback?
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Last Tango in Paris.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Devin and Carrie finally become a couple.
  • Sanity Slippage: The sanity of the Ice Dancers really starts to go off the rails in this episode.
  • Say My Name: Carrie shouts for Devin after Kitty accidentally knocks him off a cliff.
  • Tempting Fate: Devin bets that nothing will go wrong for him and Carrie. Cue their taxi crashing into an elephant, which then proceeds to sit on the wreckage.
  • Wham Line: "Any team in the final four forced to leave, due to a medical emergency, must choose a previously eliminated team to bring back into the race."
