It's finally Mindy's fifth birthday, which means she can finally go past Jet's yard. In other words, she's old enough to go to space with the others. In which we have two terrific tea parties, slam dunk on the moon, and visit our favorite Dwarf Planet.

  • Ad-Break Double-Take: A variant occurs in TV broadcasts of the two-parter.note  At the end of Part One, Mindy says "This is one small step for Mindy, and one giant leap for Stuffy Bear!" and she steps on the camera. At the beginning of Part Two, Mindy says it again and her stepping on the camera is accompanied by puff effects and the other kids cheering.
  • Bag of Holding: Mindy's small backpack stores a bunch of things.
  • Birthday Episode: It's Mindy's fifth birthday.
  • The Bus Came Back: Lillian finally returns to the show after disappearing for a while. She plays a more major role in this episode, and the rest of Season 2, than she did in Season 1. Lillian is what motivates Mindy to stay on Earth for a little while longer before officially going to space.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Lillian told Mindy what her surprise birthday present was.
  • Cheesy Moon: It's implied that Mindy told her teddy bear that the moon is made out of green cheese.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Similar to how Mindy was jumping on the bounce house in "Mindy's Moon Bounce House", she is seen jumping on it again, and is singing a song that is sung to the tune of "My Name is Mindy".
    • Before the gang gets back to Earth, they look at and describe Earth like they looked at and described it in the episode "Tiny Blue Dot".
    • The gang goes to Pluto a second time, and they sing "Dear Little Frozen Pluto" again.
  • Hidden Depths: Lillian is shown to be a skilled gymnast.
  • Human Traffic Jam: The gang is about to go to the moon but Jet is distracted by Mitchell and stops in his tracks, causing the others to bump into him.
  • Jabba Table Manners: All the kids exhibit this. At Mindy and Lillian's tea party, the kids put the teacups on their heads, and Jet grabs things using his feet.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The episode is split into two parts.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Averted. Mindy obviously turns five and is allowed to go to space.
  • Nothing Can Stop Us Now!: Mindy has waited five long years to go to the moon, and asserts that nothing can stop her now — until Sean points out that Lillian is coming up the driveway.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: The show's dynamic was changed forever with this very episode, where, you guessed it, Mindy turns five years old and is now allowed to go past Jet's yard by herself. In other words, Mindy is now, finally allowed to go to space with the older kids, after lamenting she was too young to.
  • Record Needle Scratch: When Sean suggests returning to Earth, a record needle scratch is heard when Mindy replies "Are you kidding?"
  • Ship Tease: This episode is the first instance in which Jet uses an Affectionate Nickname for Sean: "Sean-zo".
  • Spoiler Title: Guess what happens in the episode.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: "Hi Lillian! I wasn't going to the moon just now!"
  • Wham Episode: A huge one. Mindy turns five years old and finally goes into space with the older kids, permanently breaking the chains of the status quo.

Mindy Turns Five

At the end of Part One, Mindy says, "This is one small step for Mindy, and one giant leap for Stuffy Bear!" and she steps on the camera. At the beginning of Part Two, Mindy says it again and her stepping on the camera is accompanied with puff effects and the other kids cheering. Also, PBS doesn't have commercials, so live-action segments with Astronomer Amy Mainzer are used to fill the timeslot on this show.

How well does it match the trope?
