Recap / Power Rangers Turbo S1E44 Chase Into Space Part 1

Go To

Divatox unleashes Goldgoyle on the Turbo Rangers, who proves to be the most powerful monster they've ever fought. After defeating him at the cost of both Megazords and their weapons, the Rangers find their troubles just beginning when they receive a distress call from Zordon's homeworld of Eltar. Even worse, Divatox's forces manage to locate the Power Chamber and begin launching an all-out attack. TJ orders the team to head out into a hopeless battle...

Tropes

  • Badass Boast:
Goldgoyle: I'll eat the Rescue Megazord for lunch!
  • Being Good Sucks: The Rangers want to go help Zordon immediately, but they're told they must stay to protect Earth.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The NASADA space shuttle seen on television will come into play in the second part.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Lt. Stone and the Juice Bar are gone from the show after this episode with no explanation. From behind the scenes, Stone was discarded along with Mr. Caplan and Miss Appleby because the writing staff found them superfluous after so long.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The fight with Goldgoyle really doesn't go well. First the Rescue Megazord is barely able to land even a single hit without getting ludicrously damaged, then the Turbo one does manage to hit him, and it doesn't even hurt him, at which point Goldgoyle fills the thing full of holes.
  • Darkest Hour: Eltar is under attack, the Megazords are destroyed, Dimitria and Blue Senturion leave, and Divatox's forces begin attacking the Power Chamber.
  • Demoted to Extra: Bulk and Skull only appear in the scene at the Juice Bar. Same goes for Lt. Stone who's only line is saying hi to Doug. The latter is notable as it’s the last time we ever see him.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Though already poised to attack, Divatox only gives the signal once Dimitria and Blue Senturion depart and leave the Rangers on their own.
  • Diabolus ex Nihilo: Goldgoyle. Despite being "the most powerful monster in the universe" and the one responsible for destroying the rangers' zords and weapons (thereby leaving them wide open for Divatox's later attack), he was never mentioned before this episode, and is never mentioned again after his death.
    • Made even more glaring by the fact that in Carranger, he was the final Big Bad.
    • Also, what the hell were Elgar and Rygog doing wandering through the desert when they spot the Rangers? They weren’t watching the last battle apparently since they’re surprised to have seen the Rangers' teleportation, so it seems more than a little contrived.
  • Feed It a Bomb: With their Megazords destroyed, the Rangers use their Turbo RAM to destroy Goldgoyle by sending it down his throat.
  • Foreshadowing: A meta example. While the Rescue Megazord forms, this is the only time in the series that "Invincible", a song normally associated with its formation, does not play, foreshadowing its demise, and the eventual downfall of the Turbo Rangers.
  • Friendship Moment: Justin gives Blue Senturion his coin for good luck. Blue Senturion says he will miss him.
  • From Bad to Worse: TJ sacrifices the damaged Rescue Megazord to try to destroy Goldgoyle... it fails. Goldgoyle destroys the Turbo one and the Rangers sacrifice their weapons in a desperate attempt to destroy him. When they return to the Power Chamber, they learn Eltar has fallen, so Dimitria and Blue Senturion leave to try and help. Seeing Dimitria and Blue Senturion leave, Divatox orders her amassed forces to attack the Power Chamber all at once.
  • Hope Spot: In succession, as the Rescue Megazord's self-destruct and the Turbo one's saber both fail to destroy Goldgoyle.
  • Man Hug: Justin gives the Blue Senturion one before he departs for Eltar.
  • No-Sell: Neither the Rescue Megazord's self-destruct nor the Turbo one's Finishing Move so much as scratch Goldgoyle.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Elgar and Rygog have their most defining moment in the series when the locate the Power Chamber and report it to Divatox.
  • Put on a Bus: Dimitria and the Blue Senturion leave to try and help Zordon protect Eltar. While Blue returns in the finale of the next season, Dimitria is never seen nor mentioned again, leaving her fate unclear.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The Rangers destroy Goldgoyle at the cost of both Megazords and their weapons.
  • Riddle for the Ages: The Diva Pirates seriously didn’t know where the Power Chamber was before this? Why? Both Zedd and Mondo knew where it was in the past yet they almost never tried to capitalize on it, plus the only way that Rito and Goldar were able to destroy the original Command Center was by bombing it from beneath.
  • Rousing Speech:
Dimitria: Against the darkest danger, when all hope is lost, whenever you bow your heads, raise them high again for you are the Power Rangers!
    T.J.: Goodbye, Dimitria.
Dimitria: May the power protect you!
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: With the Rescue Megazord badly damaged, T.J. proposes moving in close to Goldgoyle and activating the self-destruct to take him out. It fails to do so.
  • To Be Continued: The Rangers charging outside to face Divatox's forces.
  • Tone Shift: The light-hearted, episodic season switches gears to the darkest finale in the franchise's history in order to lead into a more serious, serialized season.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: During his transmission, Zordon attempts to warn the Rangers of what's coming, but the signal abruptly cuts out.
    T.J.: "Rangers beware?" Of what?
[cut to the moon and Goldgoyle]
  • Wham Line: "Planet Eltar has fallen to evil forces."
