Recap / Power Rangers Turbo S1E45 Chase Into Space Part 2

Go To

Divatox's forces launch an all-out attack on the Power Chamber. Despite the Rangers' best efforts, the Chamber is destroyed. Fortunately, just before Divatox can finish them off, she and her forces are called away to join the United Alliance of Evil by Dark Specter. With no other course, four of the Rangers board a space shuttle to follow after her, leading to a new adventure...

Tropes

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Divatox's forces invade and destroy the Power Chamber.
  • Bad Boss: Divatox has never been a saint throughout Turbo, but her detonating the Power Chamber without calling her troops out first, several of them are on stretchers in the aftermath, was just damn cruel.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Yes this is the only PR series where the villain manages to legitimately defeat the Power Rangers. It's a fleeting victory, but one nonetheless (Mighty Morphin' ended similarly with the power coins destroyed and the Command Center blown up, but it left what we saw kind of vague, which obviously led to Power Rangers Zeo. There is no question what happened in this series).
    • To drive the point home farther, more recent seasons have had the Rangers lost their zords, base, and/or powers, but they always manage to pull a victory out of it, often by sacrificing their Ranger gear as a means of defeating the enemy. Here, they just plain lose. The four new Rangers and Alpha Six head into space without any powers, and Justin, the blue Ranger, willingly stays on Earth to be with his father. The last scene of the series shows the poor, sad boy watching his friends shoot off into space on what is likely to be a vain mission to save Zordon, while he has ended his last day as a Ranger (until the teamup episode next season) in utter defeat. It really is as sad as it sounds, but it served a purpose: there was no way anyone who saw the last two episodes of Turbo would miss Power Rangers in Space.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite being significantly less evil than Rita, Zedd, or the Machine Empire, Divatox comes the closest to destroying the Power Rangers once and for all.
    • Elgar leads the assault on the Power Chamber and personally destroys Zordon and Dimitria's plasma tube.
  • Brought Down to Normal: The Rangers lose their Turbo powers.
  • The Cavalry: Subverted. Lightning Cruiser and Storm Blaster arrive to help the Rangers, but they're quickly captured and taken away.
  • Cliffhanger: The Rangers defeated, going into space to rescue Zordon only because they can't just stand idle, and the villains have something big in the works...
  • Creator Cameo: Writer Judd Lynn portrays the Emissary from the Cimmerian Planet.
  • Determinator: The Rangers are willing to follow Divatox into space and try to save Zordon, despite losing their powers.
  • Downer Ending: The Zords are destroyed, Dimitria leaves for Eltar to help Zordon, the Power Chamber is raided and permanently destroyed, and the Rangers have lost their powers as Zordon has been captured by the being that every Big Bad in the series to this point answers to. The Rangers have no choice but to journey to outer space to try to find and rescue Zordon, but Justin stays behind since he has a chance to live with his father permanently and stays behind. The final scene shows the remaining Rangers and Alpha 6 shoot off into space To Be Continued in Power Rangers in Space.
  • The Dreaded: Divatox is terrified by the mere mention of Dark Specter's name.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: For Justin anyway. He leaves his communicator behind in NASADA HQ and walks away after the shuttle takes off, effectively severing his bond to the group.
  • Foreshadowing: What seems like a flub from Alpha's voice actor may foreshadow him losing his speech and getting a new voice in In Space's first two-parter.
Alpha Six: Ohhh no... The Power Chamber! Yo! What a complete catastrostroke!
  • George Lucas Altered Version: The last shot originally had "To Be Continued Next Season...Power Rangers In Space" when the episode went out. Later airings had "To Be Continued... Power Rangers In Space!" All home and digital media versions have it in the full format.
  • Gut Punch: After years of simplistic expectation from its audience that the Rangers would always somehow win the day or pull through from their Darkest Hour, the Rangers lose, flat out. Their Command Center is discovered, attacked, and decimated, they lose their powers, Zordon is captured, and they have no real way to defend the Earth. Somehow the whole thing just feels wrong.
  • Honor Before Reason: Alpha offers to use the remaining power to teleport the Rangers to safety, but they won't abandon him.
  • Idiot Ball: Did it not occur to Storm Blaster and Lightning Cruiser to keep their distance from the Piranhatrons and just shoot them, or if that was unavoidable, run over the grunts?note  Better still, Lightning Cruiser could’ve avoided the nets altogether if it had come in flying instead of on the ground. Worse, they drive up to the Piranhatrons only to abruptly stop and get wailed on before Lightning decides to withdraw…only for another battalion of the foot soldiers to corner him with net.
  • I Have This Friend: With the Rangers seconds away from blasting off into space, TJ realizes that Justin needs to get on board:
TJ: (into the radio) Justin, we're missing someone!
Justin: He- he can't go with you. There's reasons.
Carlos: Justin's not going with us?!
    TJ: Reasons?! What reasons-
Cassie: -It's his dad. Justin wants to stay with his dad.
TJ: ... Justin, tell him he was very good reasons, and that we'll miss him.
    Justin: He already knows.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Divatox orders a full scale assault on the Power Chamber, destroying it and nearly killing the Rangers (which she only failed to do because she was called away).
  • Never Found the Body: Averted. The Rangers and Alpha are caught in the explosion, but they all survive. Divatox isn't willing to take chances, either, and has her mooks scouring the area to find them.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Divatox has the Rangers on the ropes and is called away by Dark Specter before she can find them and finish them off. Cue the next season.
  • Oh, Crap!: T.J.'s reaction to Zordon being captured. Plus there's Divatox squeaking in fear upon hearing her summoning is by Dark Specter.
  • Put on a Bus: Justin, not willing to leave his dad on Earth, doesn't join the other Rangers on their mission to save Zordon.
  • Sadistic Choice: Justin is torn between going into space with his friends and staying behind with his dad. He decides to stay with his dad and feels guilty about it, but T.J. assures him it's okay.
  • To Be Continued: Next Season... Power Rangers in Space
  • Trash the Set: The destruction of the Power Chamber is a glorious example of this trope.
  • The Unreveal:
    • The name of the Emissary or what he is is never elaborated, nor does he ever get mentioned afterward.
    • Other than the name of planet Eltar, we don't know what exactly Justin whispered in General Norquist's ear that instantly made him believe that the Rangers needed the shuttle pronto to go there, but it's definitely something that clued him in that this intruding ragged looking kid who looked like he came from a warzone was telling the truth.
  • Wham Line: "Zordon has been captured."
