Recap / Power Rangers Dino Charge S1E18 Deep Down Under

Go To

With the Purple Energem in hand, the rangers start looking for the Plesio Zord, while Sledge dispatches Meteor once more to destroy the Zord before they can use it against him.

Kendall, believing the Plesio Zord to still be around Auckland tasks the rangers with finding it before they return home. They enlist the aid of Dr Runga, a famed archaeologist and self described rival to Amber Beach's Dinosaur Museum. He believes the teens are taniwha hunters, researching the Māori myth that the taniwha is actually a living plesiosaur. Runga himself is a believer of the myth, with a plesio tattoo on his arm; but he is still skeptical of the myth due to his job.

The rangers search the entirety of the North Island looking around the coast in the Megazord, as well as the Auckland beaches and coves. Shelby spots the zord at one of these coves due to possessing the Purple Energem, and at that point Fury and Meteor attack, bombarding the Plesio Zord. As the rangers fight the two, Plesio retreats, and Kendall informs the team that due to not having any contact with its energem, the zord is sick.

Fury decides to enlist Dr Runga's help in finding the zord, promising him fame and fortune in exchange for finding it. Runga, under threat of death decides to cooperate, locating Shelby and seeing the proof with his own eyes. He decides to hold a press conference about the video he saw, which he had stolen from Shelby, so her horror. She accuses him of only looking for money, and not taking into consideration how the plesiosaur will be once all the fossil hunters arrive to find it. He follows the rangers to a cove outside Auckland, where Plesio is hiding.

As the rangers reveal to him that it is mechanical in nature, and he puts two and two together, Fury and Meteor arrive to take them out. Runga flees into the cave, while the rangers battle the aliens. Shelby breaks off to head into the cave, with Meteor following her. As he blasts her and knocks the Purple Energem out of her hand, Runga picks it up and tosses it to Plesio, fully recharging it and everyone flees the cave. Plesio flies out and blasts Meteor; Sledge responding with Magnabeams. As the Dino Charge Megazord is still recharging, they instead hop on Plesio, using it to take the fight into orbit. The Plesio Zord transforms into the Plesio Charge Megazord, and it is huge, batting Meteor away with ease before finishing it off with an energy blast.

With the Zord and Energem in their possession, the rangers head home victorious. Sledge meanwhile has had enough. Every time he sends Fury to retrieve the Energems, he fails. Every time he trusts Fury, he lets him down. Now it is time for him to do things right, and to do that, he needs to do it himself...

Tropes:

  • All Myths Are True: The episode weaves this into the narrative again, this time concerning the Loch Ness Monster and Māori taniwha as living plesiosaurs.
  • Artistic License – History: Ivan expresses amazement that the Earth turned out to not be flat, and Koda agrees. This is excusable for the caveman, but not for Ivan; the notion that medieval people thought so is actually a modern-day myth. Not only the shape of the world, but also (a decent approximation of) its size, have been quite well-understood since at least the days of the ancient Greeks, and there's no good reason why an educated medieval knight would believe in a flat Earth.
  • Broken Pedestal: Shelby with Dr. Runga when she finds out he's only interested in the fame and fortune of discovering a live dinosaur. He gets better, though.
  • Continuity Snarl: Dr. Runga creates a minor one with five words: "only Power Rangers use zords!" In the previous episode, Albert had no idea what a Power Ranger is, even though he's been running around for (implied) several months as the Purple Ranger acting as the local vigilante crime fighter. If people in New Zealand know about Power Rangers and how they operate, how had Albert, who makes sure to keep informed about the goings-on (witness his police scanner) remained completely ignorant of the concept?
  • Deal with the Devil: Fury promised to give Dr. Runga press for finding a real dinosaur and to spare his life in exchange for finding the Pleziozord for him.
  • Orcus on His Throne: After too many failures on Fury's part, Sledge decides it is time he does something about the rangers himself.
  • Shout-Out: As Sledge is scolding Fury, he refers to the Rangers as "teenage twerps".
  • Stock Footage Failure: During the Megazord battle, the Plesio Charge Megazord has the Plesio Charger, even though Kendall never mentioned its existence and the Rangers never used it on screen.
  • Transforming Mecha: Just like the Ptera Charge, the Plesio Charge is a self contained Megazord.
