Recap / Orphan Black S 05 E 06 Manacled Slim Wrists

Go To

Krystal stumbles on to a conspiracy involving Dyad after her friend Bree suffers hair loss. Her efforts to uncover the truth nearly ruin Sarah's plan to figure out how the new player fits into Dyad's plans. Elsewhere, Cosima begs to be let out of her basement prison, Susan Duncan and Virginia Coady attempt to compromise, and a dark secret involving P.T. Westmoreland is exposed.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Len Sipps is not too pleased to find out that Krystal's friend has been stealing from him.
  • Broken Pedestal: P.T. Westmoreland. Mud called him a savior who allowed her in after her drug problems essentially estranged her from her parents and nearly resulted in her death via drug overdose. This makes it hard for her to betray him. But when Cosima reveals that P.T. Westmoreland is not who he says he is, the community of Revival react with violence, while Mud has a My God, What Have I Done? moment.
  • Call-Back: Kira's vomit scene echoes an earlier scene in Season 1 where Sarah swallows some dish soap so she can vomit during a meeting at the Police Station Internal Review Board.
  • Dies Wide Open: Ira finds Susan this way at the end of the episode, before apparently succumbing to his illness.
  • Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Krystal convinces Bree to flirt with Scott as a distraction so she can leave the hobby shop to pursue her own plans.
    • Both Sarah and Art try to convince Krystal to stick to her chat with Len Sipps and not try to get into his pants.
  • Groin Attack: Krystal does to Len Sipps after the latter confronts the former over some creme that Bree stole. Bonus points when you realize that Len is played by Tatiana Maslany's real life boyfriend, Tom Cullen.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Not a cough, but Ira is glitching so badly by the end of this episode it is hard to imagine if he will be alive in the next.
  • Just in Time: P.T. Westmoreland is about to be poisoned by Susan when Mud gets Coady to intervene at the last minute. This all but seals Susan's fate.
  • Long-Lived: Ultimately averted, the man masquerading as P.T. Westmoreland is a regular man who is dying of old age.
  • Make-Out Kids: Krystal's make-out session with Len Sipps is played like this to Sarah and Art. Doubles as a Take That Us by Tatiana Maslany and Tom Cullen who are a couple in real life.
  • Medal of Dishonor: Mud is made to wear a cowbell as punishment for attempting to help Yannis.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mud has a big one when she realizes that P.T. Westmoreland is not who he claims to be.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: Krystal and Bree have a large freakout when Bree's hair starts falling out. Later, Krystal threatens Len Sipps with the creme that Bree used, then uses the same creme on his beard, completely freaking him out.
  • Powder Keg Crowd: With the deaths of guards by Yannis's hands in the previous episode, the tension at Revival is getting rather heated with residents wondering why the "Savior" isn't presenting himself to calm the masses. This doesn't get any better with Aisha's death, and gets worse when guards confront Cosima. The Keg finally goes off when Cosima reveals the truth about their "Savior".
  • The Reveal: P.T. Westmoreland is dying. Not only that, P.T. Westmoreland is not who he claims to be but rather a regular old guy named John. When Cosima breaks this news to the community at Revival, the result is a full blown riot.
  • Sticky Fingers: Apparently Bree is prone to this, stealing some sample creme from Len Sipps.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: No pitchforks are used, but the community of Revival is burned to the ground by its residents.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: To feign illness, Mrs. S. has Kira swallow some ipecac. The result goes all over Mr. Frontenac's shoes.
  • Would Hurt a Child: P.T. Westmoreland is harvesting the blood of the children to extend his life, even if there are inherent risks in his actions. Not only that, his schemes to cheat death actually result in Aisha's death.
