Recap / Orphan Black S 05 E 07 Gag Or Throttle

Go To

While Cosima, Scott, and Sarah work together to uncover the truth about P.T. Westmoreland, Rachel makes her own terrifying discovery. Sarah and Mrs. S must work quickly to safeguard Kira before P.T. Westmoreland executes his plans.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Batman Gambit: Rachel sends Frontenac and his men to capture Sarah and Mrs. S. Only that they are not there. In fact, Rachel had secretly warned Art about Frontenac coming and that this was a ploy so that the guards would be absent from Dyad when Sarah and Mrs. S. came to collect Kira.
    • This could count as a long con given that Rachel was drinking heavily throughout the episode. Whether she had her Heel–Face Turn before or when Sarah made The Reveal to Rachel is not known, but Westmoreland was suckered into thinking that she still has some "issues" with her role in Neolution and not knowing that things were actually going south until after Rachel dug her bionic eye out.
  • Blatant Lies: We find out why Rachel was so intent on working with Neolution earlier- she was offered a contract by P.T. Westmoreland which included a provision that she is no longer bound or monitored by Neolution anymore. While she views her hospital record with her Dyad number with suspicion, what really seals this is the tablet that allows P.T. Westmoreland to view her every single action through her bionic eye.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mud got hers regarding P.T. Westmoreland last episode, now it is Rachel's turn.
  • The Bus Came Back
    • Aldous Leekie returns via a Flashback.
    • Mark and Gracie return. Mark meets up with Virginia Coady and is promised a cure for the Castor glitch if he gives up Helena's location. Meanwhile, Gracie meets up with Helena at the convent she is at.
    • After a gap of 4 episodes, Alison returns as well, this time with a completely new look.
  • Call-Back
    • Donnie looks warily at the glue gun he was tortured with as Alison disposes of her art stuff.
    • Sarah has to calm Mrs. S. down when the latter decides Violence is the Only Option to get Kira back, noting that Mrs. S. usually is the one who tells Sarah to remain calm and that they will think of something.
  • Chekhov's Gun
    • We see that the bionic eye P.T. Westmoreland implanted into Rachel had two purposes. First was for him to monitor her every move. Second, his monitoring device had a button that would send images to Rachel's eye. This is how she got the message to kill Susan Duncan back in Season 4.
    • Related to the bionic eye, the eyepatch that Rachel used before returns, this time to block the bionic eye out.
    • Kira referred to Rachel as the Elephant and Revival as Wonderland in the previous episode. She uses these code words to tell Sarah that Rachel plans on moving her to Revival.
  • Covert Distress Code: Kira tells Sarah that the Elephant is sad, and that the elephant wants to move the Mouse to Wonderland. Given that Kira had previously referred to Rachel as Elephant, and that Revival was Wonderland, Sarah exactly knows what Kira is talking about.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode focuses on Rachel and her earlier life at Dyad, and how she got to be the cold person she is today.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Rachel gets absolutely smashed upon the discovery that P.T. Westmoreland has been watching her. While one would think it is due to the revelations that she has discovered in this episode, it is far more likely that she got herself drunk in order to lessen the pain from digging her eye out.
    • Later, Rachel also has this when she realizes that P.T. Westmoreland has not only been actively monitoring her, but the contract that she supposedly signed is not worth the paper it is printed on.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In a flashback, it is revealed that Aldous Leekie is not happy that Rachel either killed, or allowed Miriam Johnson (another Leda Clone) to die in order to carry out an autopsy on the Leda disease.
  • Eye Scream: Rachel does this to herself, digging out her bionic eye with a piece of the jagged stem from the Martini glass she was drinking with.
  • Flashback: Rachel gets a few in this episode regarding her experiences with Dyad, especially with Aldous Leekie.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Rachel gets Kira back to the safe hands of Mrs. S. and Sarah.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: P.T. Westmoreland's reliance on the bionic eye implant works against him here as he is unaware of Rachel's real plans until the end of the episode.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Rachel, after the discovery that P.T. Westmoreland has been actively monitoring her. Justified as she likely needed to be stone drunk to handle the pain from her plan to dig her eye out with a glass spike.
  • Last of His Kind: When Mark Rollins returns, he views the graves of Susan and Ira with Virginia Coady. When he asks Coady if he is the last surviving Castor Clone, she all but confirms that he is.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Mrs. S. almost does this, deciding to go all Guns Akimbo into Dyad to rescue Kira. Sarah even lampshades this noting that she usually is the one who falls into this trope.
  • Oracular Urchin: Kira is at it again. She knows that someone has gotten into Rachel in a bad way. When she asks Rachel who hurt her, Rachel can only respond with "All of Them".
  • The Reveal
    • Ira's last name is Blair.
    • Rachel finds out P.T. Westmoreland has been spying on her the entire time via the bionic eye implanted in her in season 3, and that the contract that she signed "legally emancipating" her from Neolution is really nothing.
    • Cosima and her team find out P.T. Westmoreland is actually John Patrick Mathieson. They then promptly share this information with Sarah and Rachel.
  • Violence is the Only Option: Mrs. S. uncharacteristically freaks out after finding out from Cosima of Neolution's plans for Kira. She starts loading some handguns until Sarah (also uncharacteristically) has to calm her down.
  • Wham Shot: The tablet P.T. Westmoreland is using is actually a monitoring device that is linked to Rachel's bionic eye.
