Recap / Murdoch Mysteries S 2 E 10 Murdoch Dot Com

Go To

The discovery of a body made to look like a suicide leads Murdoch into the world of telegraphy, the 1895 equivalent of the Internet.

Tropes:

  • The Con: The killer's M.O.: They use the telegraph to gain the confidence of women before tricking them into sending them money. The Victim of the Week was a coworker who became suspicious and began snooping around, threatening to expose them. They also killed a former employee to steal his identity, and frame him for the crimes.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A criminal targets women they speak with anonymously over a network. They begin innocuously gaining their confidence, at which point the interactions become more intimate and even explicit, before tricking them into sending them money. In at least one case this leads to a woman's death when they lure her into a meeting.note  It's basically an internet phishing scam, only done by telegraph.
