Recap / Murdoch Mysteries S 1 E 4 Elementary My Dear Murdoch

Go To

Summary: Arthur Conan Doyle, visiting Toronto to address a group on spiritualism, and Murdoch join forces to uncover the murderer of a young woman found buried in a shallow grave.

Tropes:

  • Historical Domain Character: Arthur Conan Doyle.

  • Historical In-Joke: Brakenreid suggests to Doyle that he should write a story about Sherlock Holmes and a giant dog.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: This episode leaves it largely unclear whether Sarah Pensall has any actual supernatural abilities. Murdoch confirms that a great deal of her supposed powers are faked, but she also shares details about (and a message from) his late fiancee Liza, which she shouldn't have had any way of knowing.
  • Phony Psychic: Murdoch reveals that Sarah Pensall's seances are faked with the help of her assistant, who digs up information on her clients for her to use during sessions, as well as hiding in the room to help create supernatural knocking and other phenomena.
