One of the conspirators running a fixed dog fighting competition is murdered and the drunkard who is the prime suspect happens to be Murdoch's estranged father.
Tropes:
- Abusive Parent: Harry Murdoch, William's estranged father. His son blames him for causing his mother's death, mistreating and abandoning his family. Subverted. Murdoch just misremembers the events. His father has been an alcoholic and has had issues, but he never hit his children nor his wife, and wasn't responsible for his wife's death.
- Idiot Savant: Phillip is "slow" and appears to have some kind of mental handicap, but he has a remarkable memory for time.
- It's Personal: Murdoch's estranged father is a suspect in the murder investigation.
- One of Our Own: Murdoch must investigate a case in which his father is a suspect. He tries to recuse himself, but his request is denied.
