"Are you a giraffe or a seagull?"

"Mind awake. Body asleep."
Elliot

  • Brainwashed: Angela appears to undergo some kind of psychological reprogramming by Whiterose as a means of indoctrination. Based on Angela's eerie behavior afterward, it worked.
  • Creepy Child: The little girl that interrogates Angela.
  • Dream Weaver: Elliot uses lucid dreaming to spy on Mr. Robot, and ultimately track down Tyrell.
  • Door Handle Scare: Elliot gripping the knob on his apartment door after Mr. Robot leaves.
  • The Faceless: Angela's kidnappers are barely shown and we never learn their identities apart from a connection to Whiterose.
  • Genius Thriller: Most of the episode concerns Elliot and Mr. Robot trying to decode a rather complicated message from the Dark Army so a rendezvous can be established.
  • Left Hanging: Even though the "previously" segment includes the diner shooting, we never learn of Darlene and Cisco's fates in this episode. We are also shown Joanna and Mr. Sutherland preparing to visit her stalker, whose identity we do not learn in this episode, either.
  • Mind Screw: It says a lot that this episode is actually more confusing than "eps2.4_m4ster-s1ave.aes". Angela's interrogation alone has been analyzed to death, and while season three seems to elucidate that it was her recruitment by the Dark Army, no one is certain as to the significance of the little girl, the Lolita book, and the questions themselves. The little girl has especially been the subject of discussion after season three subtly reveals that she is Angela!
  • Nightmare Fuel: The situation that Angela is in. She has been taken by two strangers who lock her in the back of a van to a house wherein we see family pictures with the faces covered in post-it notes. She is then led to a dark room with an aquarium where she is interrogated by a strange little girl and Whiterose. The whole thing is underscored by an eerie drone that illustrates just how unnatural and bewildering all of this is to Angela. Mind you, she does not even know why this is happening to her.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Everything leading up to Angela's interrogation and Tyrell's reunion with Elliot is built up with vaguely sickening patience and suspense.
