Amity learns more about Luz when she spends the night at the Owl House.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: As revealed in this chapter, Luz was put through hell when she was nearly beaten to death by a mob just because she was human.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance:
  • Adults Are Useless: None of the parents at the slayground bother to stop their kids from hurting Luz, instead actively encouraging them. This is what earns them Eda's wrath.
  • After Action Patch Up: Luz bandages her hands after beating Eyepatch into the dirt. Seeing the poor bandaging Luz did to her hands makes Amity do it for her.
  • Body Horror: Luz got several injuries from the mob at the slayground including a black eye, a cut on her head drawing blood, a swollen nose, busted lip, and bruises everywhere. The most severe one was her left leg, which was gashed open and bent the other way: after it was healed, she could rotate her ankle.
  • Break the Cutie: Luz was so happy and optimistic up until she was 5. Then all of it disappeared because of the slayground incident.
  • Brick Joke: In the last chapter, Eda decides to join the kids in another conjuring to revive a squirrel that owes her acorns. It turns out they succeeded.
  • Broken Tears: Luz and Eda shed these after Eda patched her up following the Slayground incident.
  • Call-Back: As a result of their fallout, Luz views herself as a bad influence to Willow, something Amity called her back in Chapter 1.
  • The Cameo: Kikimora and Warden Wrath appear during the last flashback at the end of the chapter.
  • Content Warning: The chapter starts with one to advise readers of the graphic slayground incident.
The following chapter, out of concern from the author, may contain scenes that may be too close to home. This is a reader's discretion advised for those who have had similar experiences.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: During her first outing from home at 5 years old, Luz snuck away from Eda while they were running errands and went to the slayground. While playing on the swings, she flew off and her hood fell: once everyone saw her ears, they proceeded to beat her until Eda came to help. By then, Luz had been left with serious injuries and trauma.
  • Death Glare: Eda shot one at the mob that attacked Luz before unleashing the pox curse on them.
  • Double Entendre:
    • While discussing sleeping arrangements, Luz asks Amity if she wants to sleep in her bed. It takes asking again for her to realize how that sounds.
    • Later while sharing her bed with Amity, Luz says it's different from sleeping with someone other than Willow, Gus and King.
Luz: But not in that manner. Tell people about it and I can make sure your death looks like an accident.
  • Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: 5-year-old Luz shouts "ewwands" when Eda said "errands".
  • Eye Scream: One of Luz's injuries from the slayground incident was a black eye.
  • Fantastic Racism: None of the witches involved in the Slayground incident had any good reason to attack Luz. They just started beating her just because she was human, even harder when she started crying.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Luz starts to feel weird around Amity.
    • The photo of Luz with the human boy who means a lot to her.
    • Hooty claims to have a friend named "Pucky".
  • Furry Reminder: Barcus may be an intelligent demon, but he's still a dog so chasing squirrels is a must.
  • Gossipy Hens: Emira is mentioned to be one for gossip and spreading rumors.
  • Gut Punch: The story behind the slayground incident officially solidifys Luz Clawthorne's Darker and Edgier tone.
  • Happy Flashback: The day of the Slayground Incident started with Eda taking Luz to run errands and leaving the Owl House for the first time.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Amity notes Luz has a soft side since she has a copy of Otabin.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Amity learns about the slayground incident and why Luz acts the way she does.
    • Viney tells Willow that she gave Luz the idea of using the ghost ball.
  • In the Hood: Eda had Luz wear a blue hoodie to cover her ears while shopping. Too bad she couldn't keep the hood up.
  • Interspecies Romance: Barcus' parents are a normal witch for a mom and a part-fish man for a dad.
  • It's All My Fault: Luz blamed herself for sneaking away from Eda and going to the slayground while Eda told her she should've kept a closer eye on Luz.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Some of the parents called Luz a "thing" when they saw her ears.
  • Kids Are Cruel: All the kids who attacked Luz did so unprovoked, not even giving her a chance to respond before jumping her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The entire mob that attacked Luz was cursed by Eda with boils that excreted zit pus when popped.
  • Luminescent Blush: Luz sports these a few times when Amity shows concern for her, along with sleeping in the same bed with her.
  • Mythology Gag: The hoodie Eda had Luz wear had cat ears on it.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: The reason behind Luz's overall creed. She refuses to experience what happened the day of the slayground incident ever again, which is why she toughened up, learned magic and messed with other people before they had a chance to mess with her.
  • Noodle Incident: When Luz was 11, she got a gash on her arm when she went down a homemade slide for a stunt to post on Penstagram.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: The "Purple Rain" reference naturally goes over Amity's head since it's a human reference.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After seeing the state Luz was in, Eda gives the mob their comeuppance for messing with her baby.
  • The Reveal: 1) The Slayground Incident, the event that made Luz who she is today. 2) The fact that Luz has a human stepbrother. 3) Willow and Gus are aware of Luz's past episodes.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Luz gives Amity a t-shirt that says "Purple Rain" on it for pajamas.
    • Luz's statement about never letting people see they got to her is the same, near exact speech Nick gave Judy in Zootopia.
  • Start of Darkness: The Slayground incident marked the end of Luz's optimistic outlook on life and the beginning of her aggressive, rebellious nature.
  • Stepford Snarker: As part of her vow to toughen up, Luz became one.
  • Talk to the Fist: Amity punches Hooty in the face when he bursts in through the window to wake up Luz.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Luz lets Amity sleep in her bed for the night while she sleeps on the floor. After hearing about the Slayground Incident, Amity invites her into it, sleeping back to back.
  • Troubled Backstory Flashback: Once again, the Slayground Incident.
  • Wham Episode: Amity learns about Luz's Dark and Troubled Past, which allows them to start growing closer.
