Recap / Lucifer (2016) S02E17 "Sympathy for the Goddess"

Go To

"Charlotte" is negotiating with a smuggler in order to acquire the last piece of the Flaming Sword. Unfortunately, the smuggler ends up dead before he can give her the artifact. She, Lucifer, and Amenadiel start searching for it with the police's help. What the latter two don't know is that Mother's human vessel is running out of time.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Apathetic Citizens: Lucifer and Maze beat each other to a pulp right next to a busy street and nobody tries to intervene and stop their fight. They don't even call the police!
    • Or even stand and watch!
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Chloe's snarky quip doesn't disappoint.
Ella: The home screen is...two eyes?
    "Charlotte": Human female breasts?
Lucifer: No, that is a woman's perfectly freckled rump.
Chloe: So our lead on the killer is a pair of...butt boob eyes? It's a great start.
  • Briefcase Full of Money: Mother hands one to the smuggler who claims to have the last piece of the sword. Lucifer and Amenadiel can only watch in horror as the smuggler runs off with it.
  • Brutally Honest: Since Linda is no longer a licensed psychiatrist, she just tells Lucifer straight up that he's the problem rather than getting him to realize it on his own why Maze is angry at him. Of course, Lucifer does deserve that, since he made things worse (see Not Helping Your Case).
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Mother hands a smuggler a Briefcase Full of Money then takes him at his word when he says he's going to retrieve the item he smuggled for her. Lucifer and Amenadiel are horrified by how gullible she is. Though as it turns out, he really was telling the truth. He didn't come back because he was murdered for unrelated reasons.
  • Facial Horror: Chet's face is gruesomely burned off by Mother's light-leaking wound.
  • Groin Attack: Maze expresses her anger towards Lucifer quite succinctly.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Ella says she'll break Mother's legs if she breaks Dan's heart.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Linda, after hearing how Maze and Lucifer have manages to torpedo her career.
Linda: Well, my work here is done. Literally. So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to find a very stiff martini.
  • Internal Reveal: Lucifer finds out the hard way that Maze knows of his plan.
  • It's All About Me: Chet blames "Charlotte" for ruining his life, not for betraying his mother, sending her to prison, etc.
  • Jerkass: Apparently the chairman of the ethics review board is always this way even before Lucifer got Linda in trouble.
  • Karmic Death: Chet tried to kill "Charlotte" for ruining his life; he gets his face burned off by the light that leaks from the wound he inflicted on her when she tries to remove the knife.
  • The Load: Chet is basically the Fredo of Bianca's empire. He murders the man who was working for his mother (based on a misunderstanding) and more importantly leaves his phone, which has enough evidence to bring Bianca's empire down, at the crime scene.
  • Mama Bear: Both Bianca Ruiz and "Charlotte" will stop at nothing to protect their children.
  • Miming the Cues: Lucifer is coaching his mother on what to say to Chloe, but "Charlotte" doesn't quite get what her son's trying to tell her.
Charlotte: I heard... things. [Lucifer mimes a cellphone behind Chloe's back] On a... On - on the phone call. [Lucifer imitates a gun with his hand] Fingers. Pointing?
    Chloe: You heard fingers pointing?
Charlotte: [Lucifer seems angry] Very angrily. Yes. Also, a gunshot. [Lucifer puts his hand on his chest and falls slowly] Sounded like he was dying, or... melting? [Lucifer looks at her, dumbfounded] It's... hard to tell.
  • Never My Fault: Chet blames Charlotte for getting his mother arrested instead of himself for, you know, dropping his phone next to a murdered man.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Lucifer and Maze try to convince Linda's superior not to suspend her. But Lucifer being Lucifer opens his big mouth by mentioning that they slept together.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Chloe, when she ditches her rumpled work clothes and dons a fancy dress and go-go boots. Even "Charlotte" admits (albeit with a small nod) that she looks good.
  • Spoiled Brat: Chet Ruiz, big time. He publishes his (terrible) songs through a vanity label that his mother pays, has almost been arrested more times than either Bianca or Charlotte can count, and drops his phone in the scene of a murder, but still has the nerve to whine about his bank account (which his mother is funding) running low.
  • The Unfavorite: Amenadiel confides in Dan that their parents always favored Lucifer more than him. He's spectacularly proven wrong when the third piece of the Flaming Sword that God entrusted to "His favorite son" turns out to be the pendant he's been wearing for millennia. The look on his face says it all.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Two people are beating each other to a pulp in the middle of the city and nobody bats an eye.
  • Villainy-Free Villain: The chairman of the ethics review board. Linda describes him as a smug egomaniac. However, to anyone who doesn't know the truth about Lucifer, helping people sneak out of a mental institution and sleeping with a patient are valid reasons to punish a psychiatrist.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Chet
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never learn what Maze did to the chairman of the ethics review board, although since Linda continues to be a practicing psychiatrist and he's never mentioned again, it can't have been pretty, or the sex was amazing.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: While "hero" might be stretching it, Maze does call Lucifer out for jeopardizing Linda's career, for not telling her about his plan (making her think he's leaving her), and for not realizing that his actions would affect everyone around him.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Chloe reveals to Lucifer that Mother confessed she's this to Lucifer (and his "father's ex").
