Recap / Lucifer (2016) S02E16 "God Johnson"

Go To

An orderly has been found murdered in a psychiatric hospital. Among the patients is one God Johnson, who might, in fact, be God. This give Lucifer a bit of a freak-out.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Abusive Parent: The killer's mother.
  • Artifact Domination: He might be committed to a psychiatric hospital, but God Johnson isn't really crazy; he's just under the influence of the Flaming Sword's divine power.
  • The Butler Did It: One of the nurses was the killer.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Lucifer vents out millennia of anger on the man calling himself God, only to have him apologize for how he behaved to his son. He says he doesn't even remember why he did it. Then the belt buckle is removed and Earl Johnson is back to his old self, having no memory of the past few months.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Despite insisting that he's "punishing" his parents by setting them up to fall in love again, because once the honeymoon's over they'll torture each other worse than he could possibly manage, Lucifer sure does look like a kid at Christmas as he watches them dance. Linda accuses him of "Parent Trapping" them.
  • Funny Background Event: Amidst the chaos after Lucifer stirs up all the patients so he and Johnson can escape, one guy is calmly sitting in a chair, reading a book and gives Lucifer and Johnson a little salute as they pass him.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: "God" Johnson turns out to be an ordinary man under the influence of a piece of the Flaming Sword. When uniting the two pieces doesn't make the sword work, Lucifer realises there's another piece.
  • Groin Attack: The Goddess' response to being set up on a blind date with her ex-husband, God, is to knee him in the balls. Turns out God doesn't like that sort of thing any more than human males.
  • He Knows Too Much: The nurse killed the orderly because he found out what she was doing.
  • Healing Hands: God Johnson succeeded in healing a dying woman.
  • Hyperventilation Bag: After Linda meets "God" she's so overwhelmed that Lucifer has to wheel her out of the room in a wheelchair while she clutches a brown paper bag that she's obviously been breathing into.
  • Immune to Mind Control: God Johnson is unaffected by Lucifer's powers of coercion.
  • In Medias Res: The episode begins with Lucifer inside the mental institute, being carted somewhere by someone.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Linda is naturally flustered when informed that she's just met God, and says that she should have bowed or something. She curtsies the next time they meet, but God Johnson says that a handshake will do fine.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Is God Johnson really God Himself? Lucifer is skeptical at first, but is convinced when the man calls him "Samael". It's later revealed that the man was simply under the influence of one piece of the Flaming Sword, which gives him "the power and knowledge of the divine". He returns to his old self the moment the belt buckle is removed.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: Downplayed. When Lucifer grows impatient with trying to get to God Johnson through the precinct's red-tape, he decides to take advantage of everyone not believing he is who he says he is and makes everyone think he just has a Devil Complex. He otherwise behaves exactly as he always does.
  • Pyromaniac: Pete, a patient at the hospital, just wants to watch it all burn.
  • The Reveal: Lucifer and Amenadiel realize Uriel's last word was "The piece is here" (not "peace" as they assumed), referring to the belt buckle.
  • Something Only They Would Say: God Johnson calls Lucifer "Samael" before they are even introduced. It's what convinces Lucifer that this man really is God. Amenadiel thinks he could have easily found out the name from the internet, but Lucifer says that didn't even introduce himself to God Johnson; Johnson already knew who he was.
  • Strolling Through the Chaos: Lucifer and God Johnson escaping from the mental hospital while the inmates cause chaos as a distraction. The scene is combined with Lyrical Dissonance as they stride through the chaos to "In A Blackout" by Hamilton Leithauser, dodging hurled objects and clearly enjoying themselves.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Ella muses out loud, "What if God was one of us?", which prompts Chloe to chime in with "Just a slob, like one of us. Just a stranger on a bus." This completely flies over Ella's head, as she's never heard of the song — though she later looks it up and loves it. Lucifer on the other hand hates the song.
Lucifer: My father would never use public transport. That song is completely unrealistic.
