Recap / Lucifer (2016) S01E05 "Sweet Kicks"

Go To

"No! W-We just wanted in! We wanted a pair of Benny's sweet kicks!"

Lucifer and Maze attend a fashion show centered around shoes. Lucifer is excited about the possibility of mortality while Maze is less-than-thrilled at the idea of her boss doing something stupid and getting himself killed. After Lucifer goes to make out with a model, some poor girl is trampled to death after shots are fired (which mysteriously hurt no one). Lucifer wants a gang war, Chloe wants to prevent one, Mazikeen is suddenly Batman, and the "bad guys" are essentially the "cuddles and ice cream" sort. Lucifer is disappointed.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Accidental Misnaming: A coffee shop clerk misspells Mazikeen's name as "Mike".
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Yellow Viper asks one that makes Lucifer and Chloe realize they've got the wrong guy.
Viper: If I wanted Benny dead so bad, why would I miss?
  • Blackmail: Lucifer cheerfully trolls Chloe by pretending he's after this.
  • Did Not See That Coming: Lucifer's reaction to finding out that a model he's making out with just wants a cheeseburger.
  • Dirty Cop: Anthony Paolucci, who was Malcolm's partner. He hates Chloe for snitching on him.
  • A God Am I: Chloe accuses Lucifer of having a god complex, causing Lucifer to drop his usual "smarmy git" persona for a moment.
Lucifer: I most certainly do not.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Mazikeen versus a gang. Maze wins.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Lucifer accuses Maze of being this. Benny actually is this, having gotten Yellow Viper into prison due to fearing competition from him.
  • Housepet Pig: Benny Choi has a pet pig named Pig Diddy.
  • Kick the Dog: Benny Choi has his own pet pig, Pig Diddy, killed, in order to further frame Yellow Viper.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Amenadiel, who gets Maze to cooperate with him.
  • Mundane Wish: Lucifer asks a model what she most desires in the world. Her answer? A cheeseburger.
  • Nightmare Face: Maze reveals hers in front of a sleeping Chloe.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Much to Lucifer's frustration, Diego is grieving for his cousin and Yellow Viper just wants to do art. Even Hector, who was responsible for the accidental death of Paula Cortez, cries over the killing of Pig Diddy, something he didn't want to do.
  • Separated by a Common Language: Lucifer is confused when Diego's girlfriend accuses him of making fun of the would-be gangster's pants. He did nothing of the sort; he was mocking the guy's trousers.note
  • Smug Snake: Benny Choi is a pretentious, boastful poser, but when Lucifer gets his Game Face on, he naturally crumbles.
  • There's No Place Like Home: Mazikeen misses Hell, and has taken to hanging out in coffee shops and watching would-be-screenwriters "torture themselves". It's why she decides to help Amenadiel.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Hector's response to Lucifer mistaking his heart tattoo for a standard "I love Mother" tat.
    Hector: Ex-Marine, bitch.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Yellow Viper and Benny Choi after Benny sold him out in order to eliminate the competition.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Chloe points out that Lucifer's habit of "doing favours" for people isn't as harmless as it's been made to seem in the show so far - in this case, him helping Benny avoid prison meant that the more sympathetic Yellow Viper had to take the fall instead.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Benny attempts to further frame Yellow Viper by having his pet pig killed.
