Season 1, Episode 4: Popularity: Origin of Evil

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Adults Dressed as Children: Using a youth-siphoning spell, Laura infiltrates Chrissy's school to figure out why she took one of her summoning tools. While Chrissy never realizes that the new girl is actually her mother, her use of 90's slang and lack of social consciousness that's so commonplace in Zoomers immediately alienates her to the entire school.
  • Alpha Bitch: Arabella and her crew have all of the bells and whistles of a Plastics-esque High School clique, being a entitled, super-popular girl group that catches an interest in Chrissy and makes her popular (and by extension, a bit of a bitch) because they see her powers as useful. In a Gen-Z twist, they are also SJWs who claim to be activists against things like Western hegemony, fast-fashion and micro-aggressions, summoning a Slenderman-esq monster just to "cancel" him to his face.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first it seems that Arabella's group are intending on sacrificing Chrissy to a Slender Man-like being. In reality, they needed her help in summoning him so that they could "cancel" him for the misogynistic implications of his creepypasta.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: Laura attempts to do an inversion of this trope; since Slimm Timm is powered by people's belief in him, she thinks that all she needs to do is say "I don't believe" on repeat and that would weaken him. It doesn't work until Chrissy reminds her that the one way to get rid of him is using the object that summoned him.
  • Deconstruction: The plot makes fun of a lot of tropes typical in coming-of-age School Stories, often with dire results.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Chrissy's fashion falls into this when she becomes a part of Arabella's group.
  • Expy: Slimm Timm is one to Slender Man; a Humanoid Abomination that originates from a creepypasta where he hunts down vulnerable girls in the woods. He's even called a "slender man" by an online personality. Arabella has Chrissy summon him to the corporeal plane to try and "cancel" him for it. The fact that the other girls try to sacrifice Chrissy to summon him is also disturbingly similar to a real life incident where two teenage girls did the same thing, coming dangerously close to killing a third girl in Slenderman's name.
  • Forgot About His Powers: It never occurs to Satan just to possess Bennigan instead of threatening him into becoming the popular kid.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Chrissy, who moved around constantly, was finally happy to have more friends her own age, especially female friends. Thus when Arabella and her crew asked her to join them, Chrissy was ecstatic, even if to the point she started to ignore Bennigan. When a despondent Chrissy says all this (unknowingly) to teen!Laura, the latter ends up feeling quite bad about how her constant moving affected her daughter.
Chrissy: You'd think this sound stupid, but I moved around so much growing up that I never had girl-friends my own age. So, I guess when they noticed me, it felt like it might be my only chance to have friends. See ya.
Laura: (gulity) I really am a fuckin' hag...
  • Shout-Out: In the body of a roadkill-armadillo, Satan manages to (partially) control Bennigan by tugging at his hair under his hat, not unlike Remy from Ratatouille.
  • Skewed Priorities: Arabella and her crew summon a murderous monster just so they could wag their collective fingers at him for the sexist implications of his story. When Laura and Chrissy saves their lives by killing him, they call them worse than Slimm Timm because "accountability does not equal violence."
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In the B plot, in order to make Bennigan popular, Satan starts a rumor about him sleeping with one of the female teachers at his school. The result? Not only does the plan backfire horribly, but the teacher ends up being wrongfully fired and arrested for alleged child molestation.
  • Take That!: Bennigan endears himself to an audience after he supposedly murders an armadillo (which was actually Satan), by claiming it was being racist for a Charles Barkley impression.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Arabella and her crew recruit The Antichrist to summon a being famous for hunting and killing young women like themselves just to shame him. They should count themselves lucky that Chrissy and Laura were willing to save them, but they then decide to shun the both of them because they had to use violence to banish him.
  • Tulpa: Laura questions how she's never heard of Slimm Timm before the video explaining his lore explains he becomes more real the more he's believed in, she then knowingly concludes he's a tulpa.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Arabella and her crew shames and ditches Chrissy and Laura after saving their lives from Slimm Timm because they did it using violence.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: The Devil seems to think that all of the sex-crazed hijinks one would find in High School Comedies that were so prevalent in the 80's and 90's would make Bennigan popular. All it does is get an innocent teacher falsely arrested for statutory rape and make everyone afraid to be near Bennigan for it.
