Recap / Legends Of Tomorrow S 5 E 10 Ship Broken

Go To

Everyone is eager to use the Loom of Fate, but the team must decide who they want to bring back first leaving Charlie to make a tough choice. Sara struggles to understand what has happened to her and with the help of Constantine and Ava, they try to figure out how to help her. Meanwhile, Rory has a guest on the ship that he is trying to impress.

Tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Upon finding out about her visions of the future, both Ava and John write Sara off as crazy, even though precognition isn't the strangest thing any of them have seen by a wide margin.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: After being placed in confinement by the Legends, and no closer to having the Loom resurrect her mother, a bitter Astra says she shouldn't have trusted John. John quickly fires back and asks her if she ever did trust her, or if she just ran out of options.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Marchosias manipulating some of the Legends to do his bidding: Charlie flushes down the Fate rings, Zari sabotages the Waverider, and Nate destroys the food fabricator.
  • The Atoner: To make up for his mistake, Gary dives into the ship's waste disposal to find the rings.
  • Bait the Dog: Astra expresses her sympathies for Zari's loss, but mostly because she tries to manipulate her into asking Charlie to use the Loom again.
  • Been There, Shaped History:
    • Marchosias was behind the "Son Of Sam" murders.
    • There's also a small moment where Mick flips through a history book and comments on how he's interacted with some of the people mentioned within:
Mick: Punched him...Elbowed him...Ooh! Made out with her.
  • Blind Seer: Sara is stricken blind by seeing Atropos' true form, but can see the (possible) future of anyone she touches, including herself. Gideon can't find any physical reason for her blindness, indicating that it's mystical.
  • Bottle Episode: The majority of the episode is set inside the Waverider due to a malfunction caused by the Loom of Fate. That said, despite the lack of a different setting or costumes, the episode makes extensive use of CGI with both the Loom of Fate sequence and the Monster of the Week (and a few other small moments here and there), suggesting that not as much money is being saved as in most examples of this trope.
  • Call-Back:
    • Sara mentions several people who have left the ship for different reasons (Ray, Jax, Rip and Stein).
    • Ava's serial killer podcast is mentioned again.
  • Chairman of the Brawl: After Marchosias compels him to try to kill Zari and Charlie, Nate grabs a stool, presumably to bludgeon them both. The spell is broken before he can actually do any harm, though.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: When discussing who to bring back first with the Loom John ends up torn between his promises to both Astra and Zari. In the end he sides with Astra as she later rubs in Zari's face.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Lita points out that Mick could make an even bigger fortune by investing his wealth and getting compound interest instead of letting it sit in the treasure room.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Literally, as Gary's dog "Gary Jr." turns out to be the hellhound Marchosias. He was also apparently behind the "Son of Sam" murders.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: With Astra's help, John banishes Marchosias back to hell.
  • Easily Forgiven: John points out how easily the Legends tend to forgive people who pulled a Heel–Face Turn. Astra however isn't that easily trusted, with only John himself doubting that she'd steal the Loom.
  • Evil Is Petty: After Astra gets free, she takes some time paying it back to the rest of the Legends who were in the containment field with her by squeezing them.
  • Evil Parents Want Good Kids: When Lita gets a little too excited about Mick's loot, he shuts her out of the room. He later explains that he wouldn't want to wish his daughter to repeat his mistakes.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Ava explains an offhand reference to the Son of Sam to Gary, and right after mentioning how he claimed he was driven to the murders by a demonic dog realizes that Sara's right about Gary's dog being demonic.
  • For the Evulz: Marchosias isn't working for the Fates; he just seized an opportunity to wreak havoc.
  • Friendship Moment: Zari attempts to bond with Astra, trying to show her the ship, but she blows her off. She still seems affected by it though.
  • Handicapped Badass: Sara is rendered blind as a result from the previous episode, but is still capable of fighting (since, as Constantine points out, she can still hear just fine).
  • Headbutting Heroes: At the start of the episode the Legends are torn over who to use the Loom on first, with Astra and John voting for her mother, Zari and Nate wanting to resurrect Behrad, and Ava wanting to use the Loom to fix Sara. After damn near coming to blows Charlie pulls rank as the only one who can use the Loom and says they will resurrect Behrat. Though it become a moot point when she can't use the Loom by herself.
  • Here We Go Again!: After the excitement is over with Gary Jr., Gary reveals that he got himself a new therapy pet, Gary Jr. II a rabbit. When Ava questions him about where he got it from Gary reveals that it isn't another hell beast... but he did get it from a suspicions carny who warned him not the feed it after midnight. Ava's face says it all.
  • Hidden Depths: Gary gives Mick some parenting advice.
  • Honorary Uncle: Nate seems to be becoming one for Lita.
  • I Know Your True Name: Constantine needs the hellhound's true name to banish him. It's Marchosias, which is provided by Astra.
  • Internal Reveal: Mick's daughter Lita learns that he's a time traveling superhero.
  • The Killer in Me: Sara is horrified when she sees that she is the one to kill her friends in her visions.
  • Killer Rabbit: Gary's dog is actually a hellhound that is manipulating the Legends to do terrible things (and was responsible for the Son of Sam murders). At the end of the episode Gary reveals his new pet, a literal rabbit, that likely is also a killer if you feed it after midnight.
  • Mind Control: Marchosias is able to influence people into doing whatever he wants, with no memory of it afterwards.
  • Moral Myopia: Astra's anger over the Legends not trusting her is a bit rich considering she only recently stopped unleashing Encores onto Earth and is quite openly only working with the Legends because she expects to get something out of it, even trying to manipulate Zari into letting Astra resurrect her mother before trying to bring back Behrad. Zari explicitly points out that if Astra wants to be trusted, she should try being trustworthy.
  • Neck Snap: How Sara kills Gary in her vision.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: The Loom of Fate creates some impressive visuals...only to fail at resurrecting Behrad or Astra's mother, because Charlie isn't used to handling it alone, and almost destroys the ship.
  • No-Sell: Being a Hell Hound, Marchosias is naturally unaffected by Mick's flamethrower.
  • Not Me This Time: When the Loom rings go missing, everyone assumes Astra stole them, when in reality Marchosias made Charlie dump them down the toilet. Even after seeing themselves do various things, they still assume Astra, for some reason, mind-controlled them.
  • One-Winged Angel: Marchosias goes from his Jack Russel form to a fiery hellhound.
  • Papa Wolf: When Marchosias almost attacks Lita in the archive room Mick pulls the doors open with his bare hands to save her.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Gary gets himself a new support animal, a bunny which he calls "Gary Jr. II".
  • Shooting Superman: Mick shooting a literal hellhound with his gun. Marchosias outright laughs it off.
  • Shout-Out: When Gary bought "Gary Jr. II", he was warned to never feed it after midnight.
  • There Are No Therapists: Specifically said by Ava in response to Gary getting a note from his doctor supporting him having an emotional support dog. Gary counters that there should be.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Nate's historian background finally comes in handy, as he helps Lita with her homework.
  • Time Travel for Fun and Profit: Discussed as Lita gets really excited when she finds out how much treasure Rory is hoarding after learning he has access to time travel. She hurriedly outlines a plan for him to invest the money at the very beginning of the stock market to make them unfathomably wealthy in the present before Rory shuts it down.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Gary knowingly adopted a dog from Hell.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Astra is only sticking around with the Legends because she hopes to get something out of it, and she makes it clear that what she wants is her top priority (she tries to insist that her mother be resurrected before Behrad, even though the Legends intend to do both), but in the end, she does help the crew send Marchosias back to Hell.
  • Twitchy Eye: After Gary shows off "Gary Jr. II" and, with oblivious glee, explains that a creepy carny warned him to never feed the rabbit after midnight, Ava's eye twitches terribly and she looks ready to strangle Gary.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Ava and John are both skeptical of a blind Sara being able to kill everyone on the ship. While blind, Sara manages to land a solid hit on Marchosias (with John's encouragement, ironically).
  • Verbal Backspace: Sara says that no one knows how to fix the Waverider better than she does. Except for Ray. And Rip. And Stein, Jax, and Behrad.
  • Wham Line: Gideon can't detect anything wrong with Sara's eyes, leaving her blind.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sara is a little baffled when she hears that Mick brought his kid and Gary brought a dog, but most of all when she hears that Astra is on the ship.
