Recap / Legends Of Tomorrow S 5 E 11 Freaks And Greeks

Go To

Since they need three immortals to use the Loom of Fate, the Legends hunt down the Chalice of Dionysus, an enchanted cup that grants one day of immortality to whoever drinks from it. Said cup is in the possession of a fraternity house at Hudson University, where only someone who wins Dionysus' "chug challenge" can claim it for themselves.

Tropes

  • All of the Other Reindeer:
    • The three girls that get recruited into the sorority.
    • How Astra states she feels among the Legends, as they don't accept her for what she is and try to change her.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Nate isn't exactly brainwashed, but after drinking Dionysus' mead, he's blitzed out of his head and hangs around with Dionysus for most of the episode.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Sara uses her newfound Blind Seer powers to beat Dionysus at beer pong.
  • Continuity Nod: Constantine's bulldog-headed cane shows up again (and it's confirmed that it really does talk to people).
  • Creation Sequence: The Legends putting their sorority together, done with multiple montages.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Sara absolutely demolishes Dionysus at beer pong.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Nate practically goes starry-eyed when he sees Dionysus, and he admits to having a man-crush when Lita calls him out on it.
  • Evil Counterpart: Despite Astra believing she doesn't fit in with the Legends, she actually shares quite a few noticeable qualities with each of the women she's grouped with this episode, though they manifest in different ways.
    • She has the same ambitious, go-getter attitude as Sara, but conversely lacks the willingness to detach and analyze when something goes wrong.
    • She's very persuasive like Zari, but conversely isn't as friendly and has more straightforward intentions.
    • She has underdeveloped social skills like Ava, but conversely comes off as less awkward and more menacing because of it.
    • She's had to fend for herself for a long time like Charlie, but conversely she hasn't yet learned the worth of fighting for other people.
  • Fair-Weather Friend: Dionysus' fraternity is quick to abandon him once Sara beats him at beer pong.
  • Fighting from the Inside: While he spends much of the episode drunk on Dionysus's magical alcohol, Nate still manages to provide a vital clue to Charlie, which helps them defeat the party god.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Astra (choleric), Charlie and Zari (sanguine), Ava (phlegmatic), Sara (eclectic)
  • Funny Background Event: When Charlie walks into a room as Amaya then walks out as Nate, a guy in the foreground notices and does a visible double-take. He even goes in to check the room in the background after she leaves.
  • Genki Girl: Inez Martin, one of the three girls recruited into the sorority, is an outcast for being way too overexcited about everything.
  • Gods Need Prayer Badly: The Olympian gods derive power from being worshiped. Dionysus has been able to maintain his power by posing as frat bro and Life of the Party "Dion"; the way his frat house reveres him is apparently enough to count as worship, even though none of them realize he's a god.
  • Good Feels Good: Astra seems pleasantly surprised to find that she's glad to have helped Sylvia open up.
  • Good Versus Good: Dionysus isn't a villain. He's shown to be a very fun and pleasant person, he just thinks rebuilding the Loom of Fate is a bad idea, and so opposes the Legends getting the MacGuffin they need to do it.
  • Graceful Loser: Dionysus accepts his defeat gracefully.
  • Hidden Depths: Astra is actually really good at winning people over.
  • Idiot Ball: Nate grabs it for a bit, although possibly justified by virtue of being under the influence of Dionysus' wine. When Dionysus finds out the Legends plan to restore the Loom of Fate, he decides (out loud) to actively work against them because he thinks it would also mean the end of free will. Nate, despite being right there and hearing the assumption be made, doesn't even try to clarify that they're only using it to spare two people from death and hell then plan to destroy it even more permanently than before.
  • Insistent Terminology: After drinking from Dionysus' wine and becoming one of his followers, Nate insists on being called Shotgun Nate!
  • Life of the Party: Dionysus is this to his frat house. So much so, the adoration he gets from his bros is enough to take the place of the worship he got in the old days.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Mick and Lita both have fun crashing rich kid's parties.
  • Manchild: Gary apparently still believes in Santa Claus.
  • Meaningful Name: Doubling as a Mythology Gag, the Legends name their sorority Delta Chi Sigma. As in "D C 'S" Legends of Tomorrow.
  • Moral Myopia: Astra takes offense at the Legends refusing to listen to her ideas, apparently feeling that her suggestions of killing anyone who gets between them and the Chalice to be perfectly reasonable.
  • Mundane Utility:
    • The team uses a Time Courier to change the interior of a condemned sorority house into that of John's own, to the latter's annoyance.
    • Zari has Sara use her precognitive powers to see whether the book she's going to read will give her the info she's looking for. Sara says no, so Zari can just skip reading the book.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Having grown up in Hell, Astra always suggests the most violent and forceful approach to any problem. Her plan to get control of the Thetas' sorority begins with disabling their carbon monoxide detectors.
    Astra: I have an idea—
Ava: No, one that doesn't involve maiming.
  • No Social Skills:
    • Astra's are on full display throughout the episode.
    • Silvia Hines. the third outcast recruited into the sorority, has a hard time fitting in due to being socially awkward. Appropriately, she and Astra get along very well.
  • Nothing Personal: Charlie says this to Dionysus when they destroy his beer stash.
  • Not So Above It All: Astra, at several points throughout the episode, is shown actually enjoying the whimsical nature of being a Legend.
  • Old Friend: Charlie is old friends with Dionysus. Makes sense, as they're both part of Greek Mythology.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Lisa Lindhome, the second outcast recruited into the sorority, once "snarted" at a party, which went viral in a video.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: The Chalice may only be picked up by Greeks or people Dionysus deems worthy.
  • Our Founder: A variant: In order to give Lita a better chance of getting into Hudson University, Mick travels back in time and donates a lot of money to the school, which resulted in getting an entire building named after him.
  • Out of Focus: Gary only appears shortly at the beginning. John also has a limited screen time this episode.
  • Party Scheduling Gambit: The Legends throw a huge party across the street from Dionysus's frat house, luring away his party-goers and thus depriving him of the "worshipers" that maintain his power.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Astra takes the Theta's initiation as an opportunity to take a lot of passive-aggressive shots at Charlie for shooting down her ideas.
  • Power Glows: Everybody after drinking from the Chalice.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Astra's lack of maturity is on full display here, as her idea of a solid plan to get the Chalice is to take it by force, and she quickly loses her temper or resorts to snark when the Legends refuse to consider her ideas.
  • Retcon: Nate claims to have been a party boy at college, and there's even a flashback of him falling off a ladder. This seems to go counter to him being a hemophiliac. In fact, it's a wonder he didn't die from internal bleeding after the fall. Unless, of course, his post-Crisis past self no longer has hemophilia.
  • Ripple Effect Indicator: Feeling insecure that he doesn't have a good enough background to support Lita's prospects for college, Rory uses time travel to donate to one of the on campus buildings when it was constructed to get his name on it.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: Once Dionysus hears what the Legends plan on doing, he promptly disqualifies their sorority from the challenge.
  • Start My Own: The only way to get the Chalice of Dionysus is to win the annual "Chug Challenge". Only fraternities or sororities can compete in said challenge. After the Legends fail to get accepted to a sorority, the only natural move is to invent one of their own.
  • The Stinger: Lachesis appears to Astra to collect her debt.
  • Teeth Clenched Team Work: Astra has this dynamic with the Legends in general, but she and Charlie in particular are on the brink of attacking each other during various points of the episode.
  • The Teetotaler: Zari is the only one refusing to drink from the Chalice due to it being "haram" (i.e. forbidden by Islamic law).
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: After their conventional way of trying to throw a party fails, the Legends turn to Astra for advice. Her ways of ruining Dionysus' party actually work.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Deconstructed with Astra, whose inability to reconcile her moral system (or lack thereof) with that of the Legends leads to no end of conflicts and frayed tempers for most of the episode.
  • Totally Radical: Dionysus and all of his followers, in a nutshell.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: When told to hide her fork (so that Astra doesn't stab anyone with it), Zari drops it down her shirt.
  • Wacky Fratboy Hijinx: The plot develops into a hijinx filled feud between Dionysus's fraternity house and the sorority house the Legends create to challenge him.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rory and Lita have a heart to heart after he confides in her that he feels he's an embarrassment that's holding her back, and she admits to feeling like she doesn't fit in at the college. They both reassure each other that they're amazing.
  • You Are Not Alone: Charlie assures Astra that, even if she can't fully change her evil ways, the Legends still have a place for her.
