Recap / Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts: S1 E10: "Beyond the Valley of the Dogs"

Go To

It’s a high-jumping, thirsty Mega Flea vs. the Mega Dogs as Kipo closes in on the burrow. But has she also brought home a disaster?

Tropes:

  • Awesome, but Impractical: Getting a super-strong oversized limb sounds (and looks) awesome, but it would seriously throw off a person's balance as evidenced by how Kipo stumbles through the following fight scene, only managing to get a handle on this latest transformation after being captured.
  • Damsel out of Distress: Scarlemagne's flamingos capture Kipo Oak and start to fly off with her and her friends swear that they won't stop until they've rescued her, seemingly setting up for the group having to rescue her in the following season... only for her to break free and fly a flamingo back to them minutes after being kidnapped.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Kipo hallucinates when she and her friends are about to be hurt by rubble. She sees herself on a giant guitar floating in space, with her father playing a song about her while her friends dance on the guitar strings. Mandala-like symbols show up behind them and her before a meteor falls to destroy the guitar and she stops it with her bare hands, causing further development in her mutations.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Even though Benson has just met Troy, he is already willing to fight a Mega Flamingo for him.
  • Feathered Fiend: Scarlemagne’s Nobles ride large two-headed flamingos that are very aggressive. Kipo and all her friends take part in fighting off as many birds as they can.
  • Lampshade Hanging: In reaction to Wolf's latest rule, Kipo asks if the numbers she sticks to them are actually in sequence or if she just selects them randomly.
Kipo: Are we up to 68, or are you just picking numbers at random?
  • Sequel Hook: Kipo's father, who has the answers about Kipo's abilities, has been captured by the Big Bad, and the gang rides to rescue him.
  • Skewed Priorities: Kipo is too busy to celebrate Wolf's return, even asking for a hug, while they are being chased by Mega-Dogs.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Defied. Wolf discourages Kipo from chatting during a fight sequence, as she says: "Lesson 68: Never talk during a fight".
  • The Unreveal: Lio promises to reveal what's happening to Kipo after they escape, but his capture by Scarlemagne postpones that conversation.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Kipo's shapeshifting gets a powerup right as Scarlemagne attacks, giving her a giant, beefy jaguar arm to fight with... but she spends a good few minutes of the fight against Scarlemagne's hordes just wildly flailing without hitting anything, as she doesn't have anywhere near the combat training that someone like Wolf has, and it's just not enough to stave off the attack. She does Take a Level in Badass or two during the struggle, though.
  • That Man Is Dead: Scarlemagne corrects Lio about his name and makes it clear that Lio will not use it again.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Kipo and her friends locate Lio, who leads them to the second burrow.
    • The second burrow is attacked by Scarlemagne's forces, who proceed to capture several inhabitants, including Lio Oak.
    • Lio is revealed to not only know about Kipo's burgeoning mute abilities, but also to have a personal history with Scarlemagne.
