Recap / King Of The Hill S 1 E 2 Square Peg

Go To

Bobby brings home a permission slip from school so he can be taught sexual education, and Hank and Peggy are against it. Then Peggy accepts the job to be the teacher of the course.

This episode contains examples of:

  • All for Nothing: When Peggy asks for the permission slips from the children, they all leave for the library as none of the parents approved. But it wasn't totally nothing as Bobby remained and she taught him.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Peggy gets this vibe from a woman named Bonnie over the discussion of "The Loveliness of Women," the useless book they were given as kids to explain sex. Bonnie explains she got a lot out of that book, as in her idea of sex is to simply lie back and think about those flowers while her husband does whatever he wants to her.
Peggy: Oh Bonnie, you poor poor woman.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Peggy's storyline after accepting the job as the sexual education teacher has her trying to get comfortable saying the names of the reproductive organs.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After Peggy gets the job, Dale unaware of the identity of the new teacher, talks to Hank about how he can get some people into scaring her off from the job. Hank responds that the woman is Peggy. To which Dale responds "I thought Peggy was your wife". Bill has to explain to him that Peggy is the new teacher.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Bill tries to reassure Hank that having Peggy teach the class won't be so bad and unintentionally insinuates that's she's like a bargirl. He tries to clear up what he said as Dale and Boomhauer walk away knowing what's about to happen, but fails to do so and he gets jabbed in the stomach with Hank's tree trimmer as a result.
  • Double Standard: Mentioned by Hank when Bobby decides he doesn't want to have sex and he responds that he would want him to eventually since he's his son, but not so if he were his daughter. Hank flat out admits it's a double standard, but states it's one of the few times the guy gets the "longer end of the stick".
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: After an argument with Hank refusing to let Bobby be in Peggy's class, he tries to tear up the permission slip (which was taped back together from earlier) and Hank ends up getting it stuck on his hands.
  • Freud Was Right: After Hank finishes complaining about the sex ed situation, Bill points out that Hank has trimmed all the branches off the tree, leaving it looking rather phallic.
  • Harassing Phone Call: Dale manages to scare away the original teacher of the course. Then it gets Played for Laughs after Peggy gets it when Dale calls with Hanks picking up the phone and giving his threatening tirade, with Hank quickly figuring out who it is and Dale asks to speak to Peggy. He lets her know and when Peggy answers, he goes into it again. At the end of the episode, Dale gets the answering machine and goes into the tirade again. He then changes to his regular voice and lets Hank know that tee-off time is at 3:00.
  • Job's Only Volunteer: In the episode "Square Peg," Peggy is chosen to be the sex-ed teacher at Bobby's school because the previous teacher was scared away by some "harmless lunatic," according to Hank, who knew it was Dale (sex-ed is a very controversial topic in the U.S., particularly in more conservative states like Texas, where the show takes place). The day of the lesson, Hank pulls Bobby out of school, but comes to his senses and takes Bobby back to school so he can learn about "Human Relations." When Peggy asks the class for the permission slips to take the class, every other kid is sent to the library until the class is over, except Bobby who gets to hear Peggy's lesson.
  • Loophole Abuse: The permission slip requires the parents to approve of their child attending Sex Ed. Because Peggy is the teacher, she can't automatically approve of Bobby attending. It leaves to Hank giving approval, but he [initially] refuses. "Permission denied!"
  • Malaproper: While saying the proper names of reproductive organs to herself in the mirror, Peggy mentions the "uvula" among them. For those unaware, the uvula is the little dangly bit at the back of your throat. She probably means to say "vulva."
  • Meaningful Echo: Peggy's attempt at giving Bobby The Talk ends abruptly when she points out the differences between boys and girls and Bobby asks, "You mean the penis?" At the end, Bobby asks that again, and a more confident Peggy dives into the subject.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Hank's back is hurt, so he takes his shirt off and has Peggy put Icy Hot on him and massage him. As Bobby comes in, Hank tells her "Not in front of the B.O.Y." and quickly puts his shirt on.
  • Paper Destruction of Anger: At the beginning, Hank and Peggy initially refuse to let Bobby be taught sex ed at school and the first thing Hank does after sending Bobby to his room is to tear up the permission slip to shreds.
  • Product Placement: Two real life fast food restaurants are seen as Hank and Bobby go to the dairy farm: Dairy Queen and Whataburger, a regional burger chain prominent in the southern US.
  • Sex Miseducation Class: Peggy is initially drafted to give her son The Talk but winds up as the school's sex ed teacher. Hank is initially unsupportive but becomes proud of her for being taking on the opportunity. Unfortunately, none of the other parents agree for their kids to learn sex ed.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: At the end of the episode, Hank and Peggy dance with Hank and Peggy both falling to the floor after the former throws his back out. But since they were on the floor, they both decide to do it, which then cuts the the exterior of their house.
  • Suddenly Shouting: As Peggy gets more comfortable saying the proper names of body parts, she proudly yells "VAAAAAGINA!!!", which the neighborhood hears and makes Hank spit out his beer.
  • The Talk
    • Peggy tries to talk to Bobby about the subject but freezes and leaves. Her shame in discussing this is traced back to when she was a little girl and her mother gave her a book about the subject, which she doesn't understand as there's nothing but pictures of flowers.
    • Hank's attempt is taking Bobby to the dairy farm (just like Cotton did with him when he was little), but technology has changed since then with the cow now being inseminated by a machine. Both Hank and Peggy have a change of heart after their failed attempts and tape up the permission slip.
    • Peggy manages to tell Bobby everything as he's the only one in the classroom.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Hank gets a phone call from a guy having a birthday party asking if it's OK to air balloons with propane because it's a gas, which Hank says it's not a good idea. After the caller decides to do so anyway, Hank advises him to blow out the candles first.

vaaaa...GINA!

It takes a lot to make Hank Hill spit out his beer.

How well does it match the trope?
