Recap / Kevin Can Fuck Himself S 01 E 02 New Tricks

Go To

Allison is determined to kill Kevin, convinced that it will set her free. She goes to the library in the guise of doing research to write a book about a woman murdering her husband but has little luck in trying to use the internet there. It's then that a police officer comes by to collect the corpse of a dead man who has died of an opioid overdose. Inspired, Allison tries to buy oxycodone from Marcus, hoping she can use the drugs to poison Kevin; Marcus refers Allison to a friend. Allison later meets with Marcus's friend, who tries to have sex with her and Allison learns that Marcus had told his friend that she was a prostitute. She then tries to go to her doctor in the hopes of getting the pills that way but is brushed off as depressed. A nurse gives Allison a number and an address to go to for another way to procure painkillers.

Meanwhile, Kevin believes that their new neighbors have stolen his Brad Belichick hoodie and he retaliates by setting their lawn on fire. Allison visits a local beauty salon, having been told that the business is a drug front. Allison is shocked to discover that Patty operates the salon.

Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Allison hands these out to Patty as well as a couple Armor Piercing Responses when asking her why she told Allison about Kevin blowing all their savings on a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme.
  • Condescending Compassion: Played straight when Patty says that she told Allison about Kevin draining the savings account to open Allison's eyes to the reality of things because she pitied Allison, whom she thought was misguided. It's then inverted when Allison throws that back in Patty's face, pointing out Patty's own pitiable situation that she seems to have all but resigned herself to.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Kevin is pretty prone to doing this to anyone he feels has wronged him. Aside from how he once got a mail delivery lady he was in a feud with deported, when he thinks the new neighbors stole his hoodie, he tries to steal their stuff and set their lawn on fire.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After seeing the corpse of a man who died of an opioid overdose getting hauled off by the police and the nearby cop remarking on how depressingly common this has become lately, Allison gets an idea of how to kill Kevin.
  • Imagine Spot: Allison has a couple where she imagines herself as a free woman and casually telling a complete stranger how she murdered her husband.
  • It's for a Book: Allison tries to use the library's internet to do research on how to get away with murder and uses this as her cover story.
  • Running Gag: Allison's tendency to accidentally injure other men that aren't Kevin. In this case, she accidentally breaks the nose of Marcus' friend.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Combined with some Leaning on the Fourth Wall. The librarian, under the impression (maybe) that Allison is writing a book, asks Allison why the protagonist can't just leave her abusive husband, a question frequently asked of real-life spousal abuse victims. Allison pointedly replies that between having no money, no friends or close family members to turn to for help, and the husband himself being controlling in general, just packing up and leaving is nowhere near that simple.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Raisins, specifically oatmeal raisin cookies. When Kevin and Neil try to steal a pair Allison's just pulled out of the oven and she informs them they're not chocolate chip, the two throw their cookies back on the baking sheet with disgusted looks on their faces.
  • Wham Shot: It's revealed that Patty's a pretty big deal in the Worcester oxycodone dealing scene.
