Recap / Kevin Can Fuck Himself S 01 E 01 Living The Dream

Go To

Patty: Silly me. We're all in mourning 'cause Barbie lost out on a dream house.
Allison: It's not about the house! I just... I'm so tired.

Allison and Kevin McRoberts' tenth wedding anniversary is coming up. Over the years, Allison has become increasingly resentful of her situation. Kevin, who acts as if he's the main character of a sitcom, treats her more like a maid and a surrogate mother than a partner, and she's grown increasingly frustrated with his continued immaturity, irresponsible antics, and self-absorbed and inconsiderate behavior, all of which have considerably worn down her sanity and peace of mind. Kevin meanwhile believes he and Allison are happy and everything is going perfectly fine. As their tenth wedding anniversary approaches, Kevin wants to throw his annual "Anniversa-rager" party with his father Pete, and his best friend Neil, to Allison's dismay. She can only grin and bear through it.

Later, Allison, intrigued by a flyer she finds on the street, winds up reuniting with her old high school friend (and occasional hook-up buddy), Sam Park, who has moved back to their hometown Worcester and is opening a restaurant called "Bev's".

Allison wants to leave Worcester and move to a nicer house with Kevin, even though it makes Neil sad. However, that dream is dashed when she learns from Neil's sister, Patty, that Kevin had secretly drained their savings on a fake sports memorabilia scam as part of a get-rich-quick scheme. Enraged by the discovery, Allison snaps and goes on a bender with a car mechanic and local cocaine dealer named Marcus. Returning home, Allison accidentally breaks Kevin's glass mug and she fantasizes about stabbing Kevin in the neck with the glass shard. She decides Kevin has to die so she can finally be free of him.

Tropes

  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Kevin thinks Allison's upset over the rager party (which she is upset about, but it's just one small thing on a long list of resentments that has grown over the years) and his way of making up to her involves a small private dinner... that he still expects her to cook.
  • Imagine Spot: Allison has a few of these, first when she imagines herself and Kevin in a better house, and another when she stabs him in the neck with a glass shard.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Kevin and Neil try to get out of the party with Kevin's boss by saying Neil's plumbing caught on fire.
  • Interface Spoiler: We learn very early on that Patty is going to be more than she seems because she's the only other character besides Allison within Kevin's "sitcom" reality that appears outside of it from the outset.
  • The Last Straw: Aside from the discovery that Kevin blew their savings on an idiotic Get-Rich-Quick Scheme, Allison's long-brewing resentment graduates to full-blown murderous hatred when his attempt to "make it up to her" with regards to the rager party he threw on their anniversary just completely and utterly misses the mark. And he still expects her to cook their meal herself!
  • Manchild: Both Kevin and Neil. The latter especially, considering he bawls like a baby at the possibility that Kevin could move out of Worcester.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Allison becomes convinced at the end of the episode that killing Kevin will be what sets her free.
  • Noodle Incident: Kevin makes a reference to stopping fires at his "Anniversa-rager" parties. Neil retorts that it happened only one time and his eyebrows did grow back.
  • The One Who Made It Out: Subverted - Sam moved out of Worcester but returned to open an upscale diner.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: When Pete gloats about having sex with nuns while conversing with Patty, Kevin pleads with them to stop talking.
  • Rage Breaking Point: It's bad enough that she's had to deal with his immature antics, impulsive whims, and overall irresponsible nature for the last decade, in addition to cleaning up after his messes and catering to his wants and needs while putting her own in the backburner, but when she finds out Kevin blew all their savings on a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme, Allison finally decides enough is enough.
  • Running Gag: Allison tends to accidentally injure other men who aren't Kevin. In this case, she hits a real estate agent in the jaw, causing him to bite his tongue really hard, and also whacks Marcus in the face as well.
