Jane the Guilty Catholic

"Like I told you. That envelope will change everything."
Latin Lover Narrator

Catalina's extended stay starts to get on Michael and Jane's nerves. Alba guilts Jane into starting to bring Mateo to church, while Michael and Rafael are more hesitant. A repressed childhood memory of Rafael's points towards new leads in the Mutter case. Rogelio enlists the help of a high-profile matchmaker.

Tropes:

  • As Himself: Denise Richards as Rogelio's first date, then later Carmen Electra and Brooke Burke turn up at the mixer.
  • Dramatic Irony: Invoked directly by the narrator, after Jane lists "giving the audience information they don't know" as a rule for building tension. He shows the audience an envelope whose contents will allegedly change everything. Later, as Rafael searches the Mother Superior's office, he informs the audience (and Jane) that she's returning early.
  • Gratuitous Italian: Spoken by Catalina, which evokes memories of the nuns at the convent doing the same.
  • Homage Shot:
    • To Alfred Hitchcock Presents before the first segue, where "Jane Villanueva Presents" appears on the screen along with an outline of her.
    • To Vertigo as Rafael realizes that his father's paintings were stolen from the convent Elena deposited the checks to.
Narrator: OMG I’m getting vertigo! Stop spinning!
    • To The Birds as the birds circle around the convent. Acknowledged by the narrator, who "couldn't help Hitchcock-ing it up".
  • Hypocritical Humor:
Rogelio: Just the other day I was telling Gloria Estefan what a shameless name-dropper Catalina is.
Xo: Did you tell Oprah too?
    Rogelio: No, just Gayle.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: How Mother Constantine saw stealing from the convent in her youth.
  • Product Placement: The episode makes light jabs at the Honey Bunches of Oats sponsorship by having Rogelio and Xiomara eat it at breakfast just as they're talking about subtle hints.
  • "Rear Window" Homage: The first fantasy scene with Michael, Jane, and Rafael speaking in the kitchen is reminiscent of Rear Window, with Jane's pearls and dress evoking Grace Kelly's, and Rafael and Michael speaking in old-timey accents.
  • Repressed Memories: Bringing Mateo to church dredges up Rafael's memory of Elena bringing him to a church.
  • The Reveal: Rafael isn't Emilio and Elena's biological son. Lampshaded gleefully by the narrator.
  • Shout-Out: To Alfred Hitchcock, whose suspense techniques Jane is trying to incorporate in her writing. A few scenes are played out like Homages to Hitchcock films.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Rogelio goes through a slew of attractive women at the mixer, none of which take his mind off of Xo.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Catalina's planned one-night stay turned into a two-week stay, and Jane and Michael are having trouble dealing with her and Mateo.
  • Trade Snark: Darci Factor is a High Dollar Love Dealer™. The chyrons point out the trademark every time someone says it.
