Frustrated with desk duty, Michael quits his job and starts exploring new career paths, such as stand-up comedy. Jane is frustrated that her mother is rekindling her romance with Bruce. Rafael undergoes an identity crisis after the revelation that he's adopted. Petra tries to suss out Scott and Rafael.

- Accidental Misnaming: Jane gets two cups of coffee: one for herself, labeled "Jean", and one for Xo, labeled "Zoe".
- Birds of a Feather: Rogelio and Darci are completely on the same page about how their hypothetical kid's futures.
- Gaslighting: When Petra correctly realizes Rafael went to Scott for help outmaneuvering her, Rafael denies it and suggests she's being paranoid.
- Good Angel, Bad Angel: Jane gets a puppet-themed version. Mr. Bee advises her to mind her own business; at the end of the episode he gets in an argument with Bette Meddler, who tries to convince Jane to manage everyone else's lives.
- Hand Puppet: Mr. Bee, a bee-themed hand puppet Michael entertains Mateo with in the opening, and becomes something of a conscience for Jane throughout the episode.
- My God, You Are Serious!: Jane's reaction when Michael's stand-up comedy suggestion as a career sinks in.

- Raging Stiffie: Rogelio gets one during his film shoot because of his developing attraction to Darci.
