Jane the Lackey

"It just sucked, because you were the one person that I could talk to or could, I don't know, tell me new things about Michael, things I didn't know. Hearing that he was a ball hog, or what he said after our first date or whatever. It just kept him alive a little."
Jane to Dennis

Rogelio tries to win his family back after Xiomara learns that he was aware of the Manipulative Editing used to portray her as the "evil ex" on The De La Vega Factor Factor. Jane gets a $50,000 offer for a book deal and quits her job, but realizes she doesn't get the money all at once. Jane also struggles with recurring panic attacks as Dennis, Michael's old partner, investigates Scott's death on Fairwick grounds. Rafael and Petra also deal with the fallout of said death.

Tropes:

  • Apology Gift: Rogelio's recurring "Ropology" gift baskets make their return when he apologizes to Jane; she later takes a cue from him and tries to use one to get her job back.
  • Bilingual Dialogue: Alba and Rogelio have a conversation almost entirely in Spanish.
  • California Doubling: In-Universe; Rogelio and Darci's "Maui honeymoon" is filmed on a Miami beach near the studio, which the chyrons point out is actually a beach in California.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: "The De La Vega-Factor Factor" had a negative effect on both of its leads.
Darci: I'm miserable. But here's a silver lining... now I'm famous, and fame, it really does a great job of masking that empty feeling.
  • Freudian Excuse: Discussed; Jane thought Chloe must have had some sort of terrible backstory to explain why she's such a Bad Boss, but she finally decides it doesn't matter.
Jane: Wow, Chloe. You're a horrible person, and I tried to make excuses for you over the years. Like maybe your parents didn't hug you, or maybe you grew up in a prison like Bane from that Batman movie. But I just think it comes down to who you are, a petty, mean-spirited bitch!
  • Happy Dance: Rafael and Petra have an imaginary one when Dennis announces that the body was found on Fairwick grounds; Jane and Rafael have a real one when she tells him of the book deal.
  • Language Barrier: Even though Rogelio and Petra both speak English, apparently they don't speak the same language.
Rogelio: Ooh, I love this part!
Petra: You laugh at a port?
Rogelio: Why would I laugh at a parrot? No. I'm just saying this is such a gem.
Petra: Can't you go to the gym later?
  • Lighter and Softer: Invoked; Rogelio wants a Tone Shift for The De La Vega Factor Factor to something "kinder and gentler".
  • Lost Love Montage: Jane has one of Michael when she tells Rafael that she did have a dream that she followed.
  • No Punctuation Period: Gary, an in-universe author, apparently wrote an entire book without commas before Jane intervened.
  • Percussive Therapy: Dennis makes Jane meet him at a boxing gym so she can do this to him. If she keeps slapping him whenever she sees him, she might as well be wearing gloves...
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Jane calls Chloe a bitch just before she leaves the office after quitting.
