Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 1 E 7 Bullies

Go To

Jade has got to learn on how to control her temper after picking a fight with Maynard. Also, Jackie has to do the same after Captain Black is injured. Valmont, after obtaining the dragon talisman, has decided to use it in his crime spree instead of giving it to Shendu. The three all have something in common: anger issues.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Agent Scully: Black has shown this by saying insisting Valmont's attack with the Dragon Talisman is just a blur to him, much to Jackie's dismay.
  • Batman Gambit: Jackie defeats Valmont by throwing the stolen gold into the sea, knowing it will make Valmont angry. He then tries to use the Dragon Talisman to blast Jackie, who dodges it, blowing a hole in his gateway boat.
  • Bait-and-Switch: While it seems like Maynard is following Jade around because he wants to fight her again, turns out he just wants Jade to teach martial arts.
  • Berserk Button: The basic premise of this episode revolves around Jade, and later Jackie, trying to control their anger, each with their own Berserk Button to boot:
    • Jade doesn't like anyone calling her "shrimp."
    • After Captain Black is put into a coma, Jackie gets angry whenever someone says Valmont's name, Black's name, or insults the latter's injuries.
    • Even Valmont towards the end doesn't take too kindly to having the stolen gold thrown into the sea - which ultimately leads to his defeat.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Shendu gets the dragon talisman, but Captain Black will get better from his injuries.
  • Downer Beginning: The Dark Hand gets the dragon talisman. It just gets worse from there.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Valmont argues with Shendu about the incompetence of his henchmen, as they both believe the Enforcers will return having failed to get the Dragon talismon, not knowing they were able to successfully retrieve it from Jackie.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: Valmont while using the dragon talisman.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite his betrayal, Shendu easily accepts Valmont back, though not before forcing his Enforcers go to the Arctic to "look for a talisman" as punishment. Justified, since Shendu is trapped as a statue and Valmont is among the few who can help him.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: As Jackie sneaks around Fort Knox, he hears Valmont mocking Captain Black's injuries, saying "I understand he had a doctor's appointment". This makes Jackie so mad that he slams his hand on a handrail, giving himself away to the Dark Hand.
  • Hollywood Density: Jackie and Uncle in particular seem to handle the gold bars with ease.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Jackie decides to push Valmont's Berserk Button by tossing gold overboard, mockingly asking what it would've been worth to him. Valmont proceeds to blow a hole in his own boat.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Jade hates getting called "Shrimp".
  • Oh, Crap!: Valmont says "...blast." when he realizes that Jackie took advantage of his anger to sink down the barge he's on (which is also carrying all of the gold stolen from Fort Knox), and again when the Shadowkhan show up and take the dragon talisman from him.
  • Potty Emergency: "I have to walk very far to find the bathroom!"
  • Reformed Bully: After Jade knocks him out, Maynard decides to shape up and asks to teach martial arts to learn discipline. At the end of episode Maynard, from Jade teaching him, learns what Jackie taught her, "The greatest victory is the battle not fought."
  • Staggered Zoom: Used to visualize Jade, Jackie, and Valmont's Berserk Buttons being pushed.
  • Team Rocket Wins: The Dark Hand actually succeed in taking the Dragon Talisman at the beginning of the episode, an accomplishment that astonishes Valmont, who was fully expecting them to return empty-handed and even lampshades that his henchman actually managed to do their job for once by claiming the talisman first.
  • The Starscream: Valmont has become one towards Shendu as of this episode.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Valmont, at least with the Dragon talisman on his possession.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Despite cheering along with the other kids when Jade is able to knock Maynard out cold, when Ms. Hartman comes Drew rats Jade out, without even mentioning how Maynard was stealing lunch money from another student.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Valmont completely loses it when Jackie deliberately tosses the gold overboard & sinks his own boat in the process of his tirade.
