Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 1 E 5 Shell Game

Go To

Jackie and Jade must retrieve the Rabbit Talisman from the Dark Hand all the while trying to rescue a tortoise from being someone's lunch.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Jackie fights two Dark Hand enforcers in an aquarium tank before they encounter a shark, a nod to Jackie Chan's First Strike.
  • Aesop's Fables: The whole plot is themed around "The Tortoise and the Hare." In particular, the Rabbit talisman is found embedded inside the shell of a large tortoise, who is dubbed "Aesop" by the scientists studying him.
  • Call-Back: This episode shows Jade boasting to a classmate about her and Jackie's adventures.
  • Cutting the Knot: When the Enforcers are unable to pry the Rabbit talisman out of Aesop's shell, Tohru opts to just take the tortoise and get the talisman out later.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Tohru is noticeably disgusted by Nivor's plans to turn Aesop into a soup.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Subverted Trope. Carl Nivor muses about eating Jade before telling her he was just joking and that he has no taste for children because they're not rare enough.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Jackie comments to Jade that since she saw the Rabbit talisman in Aesop's shell on television, it's likely that the Dark Hand did as well. Jade is skeptically of that...for a few seconds.
Jade: Chh, like bad guys watch...(a wall of the aquarium explodes, with the Enforcers appearing as the dust settles)...tv.
  • Never My Fault: After the Enforcers lose the Rabbit talisman to Jackie while stopping to sell Aesop to Carl Nivor, Shendu berates Valmont for ordering his men to make some minor cash instead of bringing the talisman straight back to him. Valmont tries to suggest that nothing would have happened if Shendu had agreed to give him some advance from the treasure of Ching Xi Hung, prompting Shendu to breathe fire at him.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Subverted. When the Enforcers steal Aesop, they end up leaving Ratso behind. He's not particularly happy with them when he calls.
  • Punctuated Pounding: A variation takes place as Tohru beats up Jackie while using the Rabbit talisman.
Tohru: (speeding in) Who's a... (speeds in and out) chocolate... (speeds in and out) bunny... (speeds in and out) now... (speeds in and out) huh? (tosses Jackie into oil cans)
  • Punny Name: Carl Nivor's name is a play on "carnivore", an animal that exclusively eats meats.
  • Slippery Skid: Jackie spills an oil canister causing its contents to spill out leaving a speed-enhanced Tohru to slip and slam against his comrades.
  • Slow and Steady Wins the Race:
    • The lesson of the day that Jackie tries to impress on Jade. In this case the moral is to think through your actions: by focusing on retrieving the Rabbit talisman from the Dark Hand first, Jackie and Jade are able to use its power to rescue Aesop the tortoise, accomplishing both their intended goals. Although Jade argues that Jackie using the Rabbit talisman, which gives super-speed, undermines this somewhat.
    • This is touched with Valmont as well. When he asks Shendu to give some advance from the lost treasure of Ching Xi Hung to cover the expenses the whole hunt for the talismans has already cost him, Shendu remains firm on giving the full payment only after he receives all the talismans, remarking "Patience, Valmont. Slow and steady wins the race." When the Enforcers manage to steal the Rabbit talisman along with Aesop, Valmont orders them to first stop to sell the tortoise to Carl Nivor, a decision which leads to them losing the talisman to Jackie, leaving them short of yet another step of completing their assignment and being rewarded by the frustrated Shendu.
  • Villains Out Shopping: How the Dark Hand learned about the Rabbit talisman. While Finn was watching television during some down time, Valmont noticed the talisman on one of the channels he was flipping through. It was even discussed as Jade voiced doubt that bad guys would do something so regular...until the Enforcers appeared.
