Recap / Jack of All Trades S1E6 "Raging Bully"

Go To

Napoléon Bonaparte has arrived at Palau-Palau!

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Anachronism Stew: Napoleon distracts the Dragoon during their poker game by claiming that the Ghost of Christmas Past is behind him, a reference to a book that won't be published for another 42 years.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Jack manages to procure the deed to Louisiana from Napoleon in a game of poker, turning it from a French colony to a US state.
  • The Caligula: When Napoleon arrives, he humiliates his brother in front of everyone, has the locals feign their love and support with the threat of death from his troops, threatens to kill Jack for speaking out of turn, tries to execute James Madison unprompted (planning on ransoming him off with his death kept a secret) and bets the deed to Louisiana on a poker game.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Napoléon Bonaparte is introduced as his entourage roll out the red carpet for him... with him rolling out of it, which he implies was him implementing the element of surprise. Then he berates and bullies his brother (who had just passed out of fear of him), humiliating him in front of everyone. When one of his mooks laughs at a joke Jack makes at his expense, he kills him on the spot. This establishes him as a Cartoonish Supervillain with a bad temper and a fragile ego that commands fear and respect.
  • Historical In-Joke: Apparently, the Louisiana Purchase was done over a game of poker.
  • Imagine the Audience Naked: Emilia suggests the underwear variant when Jack gets nervous about his upcoming life-or-death poker game with Napoleon. When the time comes, he not only imagines Napoleon in his underwear, but Governer Croque, Captain Brogard (whom he imagines is in a diaper), and Emilia as well.
  • Marked to Die: Jack becomes terrified of playing poker against Napoleon because a fortune-teller told him that "the shrimp will be the death of [him]."
  • Paying for the Action Scene: Hilariously lampshaded.
Jack (As the Dragoon) Oh, uh, Croque... (Tosses him a coin) This is for the broken window.
Croque: (Catches it) What broken window?
Jack: AH-HA-HA-HA! (Crashes out the window)
  • Pride: While Napoleon is a Sore Loser and a dirty cheat, Napoleon can't resist a challenge, something Emilie uses against him by having the Daring Dragoon challenge him to a poker game.
  • Stealth Pun: The fact that the Daring Dragoon wins by laying out 4 Jacks makes for a fun allusion to his secret-identity. The fact that he wins with a Joker is also a nod that Jack himself is a Wild Card.
  • Who Shot JFK?: When Napoleon forces the residents to constantly cheer him as he circles them - with soldiers pointing rifles at them the whole time - prompting Jack to suggest to Emilia some elegant ways to kill Napoleon out of revenge. One plan Jack comes up with involves getting a pasty to shoot Napoleon from "that school book depository over there."
  • Would Hurt a Child: Napoleon threatens to execute one child for every minute the Dragoon is late to their poker game.
