Recap / Jack of All Trades S1E13 "X Marquis the Spot"

Go To

King George's crown has been stolen, and Jack and Emilia have reason to believe that they can find it on the island resort of the Marquis de Sade.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Anachronism Stew: Jack calls Brogard "Cap'n Crunch."
  • Awful Wedded Life: Implied. When the Daring Dragoon asks the Marquis how he got into the "pain business", he answers that he was married once.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Played With. While the Marquis de Sade is the episode's villain and stole King George's crown, everyone else on his island are depicted as normal (for the given value of "normal" in this series), consenting adults engaged in a bit of kinky fun. At the end, while Jack and Emilia decide the lifestyle is not for them, they also decide it's not their place to judge those who partake.
  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: Feather boas are part of the outfits in the Marquis de Sade's island.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: The Marquis de Sade was a lot of things: an author of obscene Erotic Literature, a political activist, a political prisoner multiple times over, but it's unlikely that the real Marquis was the owner of his own BDSM-resort island in the West Indies, or that he partook in the auctioning of stolen royal treasure.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: The Marquis de Sade's island.
  • Tempting Fate: When Jack cracks an innuendo to an island greeter, Emilia tells him that the resort most likely won't tolerate his "perverted antics". In comes the Marquis de Sade in his horse-drawn carriage, his servants all clad in leather.
    Jack: You were saying?
