Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: In response to By Wall That Is Holey, Jack quips, "Always knew I'd bring down the house." The audience approves of this one-liner.
  • Adaptation Decay: Croque writes an opera based on his life. He portrays himself as a strong and beloved governor, while the Daring Dragoon is portrayed as bald, fat, and pathetic. Jack is only too happy to wreck the performance.
  • At the Opera Tonight: Croque's wife plots to have King George assassinated during a high-note at the opera.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Jack swings onto stage before the assassin can take out King George.
    • With Jack incapacitated by Lucianni's singing, Emilia releases a sandbag to knock the singer out.
  • By Wall That Is Holey: During the fight on stage, Emilia loosens a rope holding up a house background. Jack is standing in just the right spot where the main window comes down. The mook isn't so lucky, getting hit by the part of the set where a window is only painted on.
  • Call-Back: Using her metal-detector, Emilia finds pilfered silverware in Jack's coat-pocket, a habit first introduced in "The People's Dragoon."
  • Character-Driven Strategy: According to King George, he had played chess with Napoleon and he only moves when he can predict his opponents, hence why George has taken to acting like a loon.
  • Flushing Toilet, Screaming Shower: Jack pulls this on Emilia at the start of the episode.
  • Foreshadowing: As Croque and his wife bemoan the Daring Dragoon ruining the opera, George "thoughtlessly" spills his food on the floor, causing Brogard and Pierre to fall over before they can intervene. This hints that he's more on the ball that it appears.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Lucianni can sing at an octave that shatters glass.
  • Laughing Mad: King George practically laughs after every other line. The final scene reveals he's invoking this.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Croque pens an opera simply to make himself look like an impressive and tough figure. Camille co-opts the whole thing to try to get an assassin in place to kill King George.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: The end of the episode reveals that King George's Cloudcuckoolander behavior as an act. According to George, Napoleon is so much The Chessmaster that he panics if he can't predict your actions.
  • Schizo Tech: Emilia invents the metal-detector 73 years early.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: With the real Daring Dragoon on the stage, Lucianni orders the men to get him. Jack points them over to the tied up actor instead, prompting the men to look back and forth in confusion over what to do.
Lucianni: The one who's not tied up!
  • Vanity Project: Governor Croque wrote the opera and the opening song is about how awesome he is.
  • Woman Scorned: To keep Jack at bay, Lucianni busts out his Glass-Shattering Sound singing, causing everyone else a good deal of pain and some broken glass for good measure. One of those objects is Camille's jewelry.
Camille: You said it was a real diamond! [punches Croque in the face]
