Kalego's Thirteen Hours Arc Summary

Chapter 217: Naberius Kalego's 13 Hours: Part 1

Now that it's been one year since Iruma's familiar summoning ritual, Kalego remains in a good mood as it means that his one year contract as Iruma's familiar is about to be over. At that same time, teacher Robin is having a class with the Abnormal students since it's time for them to learn about familiar contract renewal, and to potentially cancel out of them. The former of which is an important ritual that deepens the bond with the demon and his familiar magic beast. The class notices Iruma's absence, which Lied mentions that he saw Kalego take him. Robin continues his class, and explains that the contract renewel for the second year is the official binding with the familiar to serve its master, and finally grant it a name. The result is Azz, Sabro, and Clara naming their familiars as "Vino," "Ohma," and "Boss" respectively. Elizabetta is also shown to have butterfly familiars, which she names some of them "Rouage," "Flora," and "Lilian." Jazz of course tries to hide his familiar from the class given how embarrassed he is of his fluffy Split Wolf.

At that same time, Iruma's with Kalego at the familiar summoning room going through with the familiar cancelling ritual. Iruma goes through the steps by performing a normal ritual where he burns a blank summoning seal, which begins the process to break the contract between Iruma and Kalego. Thus, Kalego makes it clear to Iruma that since the familiar contract breaking is in progress, Iruma must not summon Kalego as a familiar for the next 13 hours as it will end up renewing the contract. He orders Iruma to stay put so that nothing foolish happens, but since Iruma also has classes to attend to, Kalego states that he will be staying by Iruma's side until the time limit is up. Shortly after, the Babyls students all remain confused as to why Kalego is walking alongside Iruma. The teachers also become confused as Kalego remains alongside Iruma even during class. During a break within Royal One, Iruma remains exhausted that Kalego is sticking to him like glue, which Kalego states that trouble will flock to Iruma if he's left alone. He quickly proves this by moving Iruma out of the way as the invisible Purson is revealed trying to place a summoning seal on Iruma.

Along with Purson, Kalego proceeds to catch Lied, Goemon, and Jazz wearing Detecting Warding Glasses as they all were trying to place the summoning seal on Iruma. They all explain their reasons with Lied stating that they want to keep seeing fluffy Kalego, Purson mentioning that waiting out the 13 hours is boring, and Jazz mentioning that Schneider turned this into a betting game as to whether Kalego's contract will be renewed or not, which Jazz desires the money winnings. Shortly after, Clara and Azz are both enraged that Kalego's hogging Iruma to himself, and proceed to outright attack the teacher in an attempt to get Iruma away from him. However, they're both easily disposed of since Kalego even uses Iruma as a shield knowing that Azz will be worried to injure the friend he worships. Leaving the room while still holding onto Iruma, Kalego states that he just has to survive 8 more hours.

Chapter 218: Naberius Kalego's 13 Hours: Part 2

With 6 hours remaining, it's now the end of the school day. However, Kalego refuses to let Iruma return home as the biggest threat, Opera, is there. Meanwhile, Opera is seen getting himself prepared since he's someone who greatly desires to see Kalego remain as Iruma's familar. Kalego gets himself dressed up in a battle suit knowing that he's going to be dealing with some tough fights. He figures that hiding within Royal One or his own home would be too obvious, but before Kalego's able to properly decide where to hide with Iruma, Opera comes bursting into the room.

Opera pulls out many summoning seals making it obvious that he desires for Iruma to renew the contract, which Kalego stands in front of Iruma ready for battle. Kalego summons out Cerberus as he and Opera battle it out in an intense fight between Kalego's magic and Opera's strength. Throughout the fight, Opera attempts to place the seal on Iruma, but Kalego continues to make sure that Opera doesn't reach his student. Eventually, Kalego and Opera are about to launch powerful attacks against one another, but Shichiro gets between them with his Grand Cocoon defensive wood magic to stop them from fighting each other. Having grabbed the attention of Kalego and Opera, Shichiro reminds them that they still haven't heard Iruma's opinion on this.

Shortly after, a table and chairs have been set up within the familiar summoning room. Iruma sits opposite Kalego and Opera while Shichiro stands nearby. Shichiro asks about Iruma's opinion regarding breaking or extending his familiar contract, which of course, Kalego wants it broken while Opera wants it extended. In return, Iruma explains that he knows his original summon was an accident, and that it caused Kalego a lot of trouble. Thus, he figures that it would be best to break the contract. Shichiro asks if Iruma has any other thoughts, which Iruma admits that he feels anxious since everyone else has cool and strong familiars, and that having Kalego at his side as his familiar felt reassuring. In return, Kalego reveals that he doesn't actually have a familiar, which surprises Iruma.

Chapter 219: Naberius Kalego's 13 Hours: Final Part

An image of a claw mark is seen on Kalego's back. Kalego explains a story to Iruma of how his Naberius Clan is actually a group of demons possessed by dogs. He explains that as a child, Kalego's dog possession appears as a manifestation that attacks Kalego, and that he has to "discipline" it in order to gain control over the dog. Once he was able to successfully discipline it however, Cerberus became Kalego's vicious but loyal beast. Kalego further explains to Iruma that due to Cerberus, he's unable to have a familiar since his dog ends up just chasing them away. However, it's also due to Cerberus that Kalego's the one who watches over the familiar summoning ritual since Cerberus is who keeps the new familiars in check. Kalego continues to explain to Iruma that a familiar is just a shield to help demons, and that it's not the actual indicator of one's abilities. Thus, given how Babyls is a school to help polish its students, Iruma will still have what he learned despite not having a familiar.

Seeing Iruma still feeling anxious, Kalego reassures the former that nothing is going to change. That his fellow Abnormal classmates will still be as loud as ever, and will continue to do stupid things that will annoy their teacher. Overall, he assures Iruma that there's nothing to worry about, which Iruma finally happily accepts. Shortly after, Opera and Shichiro leave the room, and Iruma and Kalego wait it out until their contract is officially broken, much to Kalego's relief. Iruma thanks Kalego for all the help during his first year, but as he tries to apologize for putting Kalego through being a familar, Kalego walks back over to the summoning circle since it's time for Iruma to get a proper familiar. Iruma remains confused by the sudden summoning ritual, which Kalego explains that it will be fine since he will be overseeing it. Taking a blank summoning seal, Iruma thanks Kalego for all that he's done for him, and performs the summoning ritual. However, they both become confused due to a part of Kalego once more appearing within the summoning circle.

A narration is provided that while it's true that breaking a contract between a demon and beast familiar means that the demon can never summon that familiar again, it's not the case between a human and a demon. That when a human tries to summon a demon, it will summon the demon nearest to them. In this case, Iruma ended up summoning Kalego once more as his familiar since Kalego was closest to him. As Kalego tries to force himself back out of the summoning circle with Iruma trying to help him, he's left stunned at the sight of Opera and Shichiro returning to the room. A sparkling Opera proceeds to push the remainder of Kalego's body through the summoning circle, which officially completes Iruma's contract renewal with Kalego. As Iruma quickly apologizes for what happened, Kalego is unable to handle what just happend, and decides to take paid leave from school work.
