Flying Race Arc Summary

Chapter 5: The Misfits

Iruma, Azz and Clara are put into the school's Abnormal Class of misfit demons. They arrive at a horribly rundown classroom where along with meeting the other misfit students, Iruma meets a large muscular demon named Sabro Sabnock who aims to be the Demon King. However, to become Demon King requires a demon to reach the level of Rank 10 (Yod). Eventually, Kalego enters the room revealing himself to be the homeroom teacher for the Abnormal Class. He first tasks his misfit students to race each other in an "Air Racing" event, which will determine what their starting demon ranks will be. Kalego takes his class to a mountainous area that will be used for the race. However, this turns out to be an issue for Iruma given that he's a human who can't fly.

Chapter 6: Flying Race, Start!!

The Abnormal students all fly off to begin the race with the exception of Iruma, who Kalego kicks off their starting mountain to get him going. Azz has an easy time as the flier in the lead only to find Clara sitting on top of him hitching a ride to easily make it to the end. Meanwhile, Sabro flies his way through the shorter but restricted-to-enter mountainous path not caring about the danger of the powerful "Leader of the Valley" that dwells within it; believing that taking on such a danger is a step towards becoming the Demon King. As for Iruma, it turns out that he was grabbed by a random demon bird after getting kicked off the starting mountain.

The bird that grabbed Iruma drops him off at a nest within the race's restricted area where a large demon bird moves toward him. However, Iruma notices that the nest bird's leg is injured. Iruma cuts himself, and then bandages his cut to show that he wishes to help the demon bird, which the bird understands. He then discovers that human blood has the ability to heal demon wounds as he drops his blood upon the injured bird's leg to heal it. Having befriended the demon bird, it begins to thankfully nuzzle Iruma for healing its injury. Meanwhile, Sabro is seen injured and in a dangerous situation having come across the "Leader of the Valley."

Chapter 7: He Who Aspires to be Demon King

Sabro attempts to fight the "Leader of the Valley" using his Weapon Creation bloodline ability, a magic that allows him to fight with weapons created by whatever material he bites, such as the pieces of metal he uses for a necklace. He uses his childhood motivation of one day becoming the coolest Demon King to stay in the fight against the "Leader," but the moment Sabro seems down for the count, Iruma arrives to save him. Before the "Leader" moves to attack Iruma, the bird that he helped in the nest turns out to be the "Leader's" baby, which it proceeds to tell the "Leader" what Iruma did for it. Iruma convinces Sabro to surrender to show that they mean no harm, which in return, the "Leader of the Valley" thankfully bows down to Iruma for helping its baby.

Jumping ahead, the race has ended. Kalego shows off a ranking owl that will be providing the Abnormal students their starting demon rank badge based on how they did during the race. However, Iruma and Sabro are punished to go last due to them going through the restricted area of the mountains. As it turned out, Iruma and Sabro gave everyone at the finish line a huge surprise when they see that the thankful "Leader of the Valley" carried the two of them to the end. Sabro then thanks Iruma for saving him, and declares Iruma to be his rival. Eventually, it's Iruma's turn to be given his ranking badge, but the ranking owl reacts oddly and flies off. To the confusion of Kalego and the other students, the ranking owl had left behind an odd ring that's now on Iruma's right middle finger. However, Sabro remembers the Demon King's Prophecy that he read about when he was young. A story of how a person from a foreign land will receive a ring containing the Light of Solomon, and eventually unite all the demons under his rule.

Chapter 8: The Ring of Gluttony

Shortly beforehand, the Abnormal students are all given their starting demon ranks from the ranking owl. Amongst the rankings were some notable students. Azz scores the highest getting to start at Rank 4 (Daleth). Clara and Jazz Andro start at Rank 3 (Gimmel), and Kerori Crocell and Purson Soi start at Rank 2 (Bet). Once it's Iruma's turn however, they're unable to understand why the ranking owl gave him a ring instead of a ranking badge. An unknown spirit then pops out of the ring, and begins to screech to the point of the whole school hearing. The students try to calm the spirit down, but it ends up biting at Sabro and Azz to the point of draining their magic energy and knocking them out.

Kalego attempts to kill the spirit having decided that it's too dangerous, but is stopped at the last second by the arrival of Sullivan. The principal then fires his magic at the spirit, which is fully eats, and finally calms back down to the point of returning into the ring. Sullivan explains that what Iruma received is a Ring of Gluttony; a demon tool that contains a user's magic pool, but will indiscriminately attack those around it if it's in need of magic. Thus, it's now fully charged after eating Sullivan's powerful magic.

In the end, Iruma is forced to start at the lowest rank, Rank 1 (Aleph). Iruma is glad that being given the lowest rank means that he won't stand out. However, unbeknownst to him, his reputation continues to grow as a guy who somehow turned the "Leader of the Valley" into his pet.
