Recap / I Love Lucy S 2 E 16 Lucy Goes To The Hospital

Go To

After months of expecting, Lucy and Ricky are finally on the verge of welcoming their bundle of joy into the world. However, as one might expect, plenty of chaos ensues when Lucy is actually ready to give birth.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Didn't Think This Through: Ricky does his stage makeup at the hospital for the show, which makes him look like a voodoo priest. He scares a nurse who passes by, and forgets to take off the makeup when he returns to the hospital after the show. This leads to three orderlies restraining him, and he has to explain it's just a costume.
  • Exact Words: Mr. Stanley has had six children—all girls—so far, and is desperately hoping that this time he'll have a son. A nurse enters and tells him that his wife didn't have a girl, leading to celebration...and then she explains that she said that she didn't have a girl. Cue three nurses walking in, each carrying one of his new triplet daughters.
  • Faint in Shock: Ricky passes out from excitement when he finally sees his son for the first time.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Under orders from Lucy, Fred and Ethel react calmly in the face of Ricky's new-father panic, blasely telling him that women have babies all the time. Within a few minutes, however, the Mertzes break down and start showing their excitement and nerves over the birth as well.
  • Not So Above It All: Ricky pulls a Lucy when he asks Fred to bring his voodoo makeup to the hospital so he can get dressed in it before the show. That is, he dresses like a voodoo priest in the hospital.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Lucy is the one that is calm and Ricky is the one that is nervous, it shows how important having their first child is to them. Lucy even walks herself into the hospital while Ricky needs help, since he fainted on the way.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: Ricky almost doesn't go to the Tropicana on the night Lucy expects to go to the hospital, and even asks her to try to have the baby before showtime. Later, he tries to remain calm, even setting up a "rehearsal" so that he, Fred, and Ethel can each know what specific task to do when Lucy announces it's time to go to the hospital. Everything goes smoothly. Then Lucy tells them it's time for real, and everyone panics.
  • Same-Sex Triplets: One man in the waiting room has had six girls so far and hopes that baby #7 will be his first son. It turns out his wife had three daughters.
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: In contrast to Ricky, Mr. Stanley sits in the waiting room eating an apple and not paying any attention to how long his wife has been in labor. He's been through this six times already.
  • Swapped Roles: Lucy is usually the quirky one that has a Zany Scheme that goes wrong, while Ricky plays the straight man to her. Owing to her water breaking, she ends up being much calmer than he is while Ricky's sensible planning goes way out the window.
  • Wanted a Son Instead: Mr. Stanley, who has had six daughters so far, expects that his wife will have a son this time. To his dismay, she instead has triplet daughters.
Fred: Look at it this way: At least you can always create a girls baseball team.
