Recap / I Love Lucy S 2 E 10 Lucy Is Enceinte

Go To

Lucy goes to the doctor when she's not feeling well. She returns with a giant grin because she is having a baby. But how can she tell Ricky when events keep interrupting?

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Late to the Realization: Ricky notices Lucy sitting at a table, casually greets her, and continues singing "Rock-a-bye Baby" to each table for another few moments before he realizes the meaning of his wife's grin and rhythmic nodding. He freezes for a moment and then kneels to ask her to confirm his thoughts.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Lucy dismisses Ethel's guess that she is pregnant because she and Ricky have been married for eleven years and haven't had any signs once. She is very pleased to find out that she is wrong.
  • Gilligan Cut: The first scene ends with Lucy laughing off the idea that she might be pregnant—as she leaves, she remarks "The whole thing is utterly ridiculous," and the apartment's front door closes. We then cut to the door opening, and Lucy coming in with an utterly beautiful smile on her face, confirming that the idea wasn't ridiculous after all.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally Lucy is placid, harried from a Zany Scheme or doing housework. It's the first time we've seen her really happy.
  • The Scottish Trope: A behind-the-scenes version: the word "pregnant" is never used in the episode (or even throughout the entire arc about the pregnancy), given the standards of the time. Lucy is either "having a baby" or "expecting." Even the title uses the French word for "pregnant" to avoid anyone seeing it.
  • Sincerity Mode: The end of the episode is played surprisingly sweet as Ricky serenades his wife and unborn child, and they talk about if "he" or "she" will look like him or have an accent. Lucy starts to tear up even, and Ricky gives her a kiss on the cheek.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: A very sweet example: Ricky gets a note at the night club saying that a wife wants to announce to her husband that they're having a baby. He goes around asking couples, who lightheartedly shake their heads until he sees Lucy nod at him. Then it sinks in, and he rushes to her. She confirms that they're the ones having the baby. Both the stage audience and the people in the nightclub applaud.
Ricky: It's me! It's my wife!
  • True Companions: Ethel is the first person to learn about Lucy's pregnancy—in fact, she's the first person to even suggest it. The entire scene between Lucy and Ethel as they eagerly discuss the coming child is a sign of their incredible friendship; Lucy happily assures Ethel that she and Fred will obviously be the child's godparents, with Ethel beaming in delight at the idea.
  • Wham Shot: Lucy entering the apartment grinning from ear to ear, confirming that she is indeed pregnant.
