Recap / I Carly S 04 Ep 02 I Sams Mom

Go To

When Sam moves into Carly's apartment because of a big argument with her mom, Carly has to convince the two to make peace with each other.

Meanwhile, Freddie is stalked by a mysterious criminal after he records him robbing the Groovy Smoothie.

Original airdate: September 11, 2010.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: Sam and Pam have been inside the therapy box for almost 10 hours without food, but none of them complained about hunger. Any person can't possibly go 10 hours without starving. Although it is possible that the therapist did give them food and just exaggerated the phrase "No food, just talk".
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Right before the robbery, we have this exchange between T-Bo and a customer.
Blonde customer: Do you sell smoothies here?
T-Bo: Do I-? [stares at her, dumbfounded] What?
  • Big Damn Hug: Sam and Pam officiate their reconciliation in the Therapy Box by giving each other a big hug...while Carly is still claustrophobic.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Sam quickly wears out Spencer and Carly’s patience after leaving a half-eaten tamale on Carly's bed, leaving her "I heart Vegas" underwear on the stairs, and deleting Celebrities Underwater from Spencer's DVR.
  • Claustrophobia: Carly's fear of small spaces returns, leading to her mental deterioration and increasingly erratic behavior when trapped inside the therapy box, which soon spurs Sam and Pam to finally make up.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Sam and her mother continue arguing even after the usual therapy practices, Mr. Parper tells them that he is now going to have them try something unorthodox. Sam replies that it's okay, because she and her mother aren't Jewish.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Pam in response to her daughter Sam's question when she arrives at Carly's apartment.
    Sam Puckett: (shocked) Mom!?
Pam Puckett: I know who I am.
  • Double Entendre: When Pam says, "Those pants fit you real good," Dan Schneider asked Jane Lynch to look at the back of the therapist's pants instead of the front because the show is targeted mostly at kids aged 9-15.
  • Dissension Remorse: Sam and Pam finally make up when Carly begins freaking out in the Therapy Box due to her claustrophobia.
  • Endangering News Broadcast: When Freddie is being interviewed on a news broadcast for catching the Shadow Hammer on video, a girl who is a neighbor of his not only reveals his full name to the audience, but also what apartment building he lives in and his room number.
  • Face Palm: Sam complains Pam never compliments her for her work on iCarly. Carly denies this, until Pam asks what's iCarly. This is Carly's reaction.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gunsmoke says that lemonade is for ballerinas, but he claims to be fond of smoothies.
  • Kick the Dog: Sam had a bunny named Fluffles when she was seven, but Pam sold him to foreigners.
  • No Ending: The a-plot ends with Sam and Pam reconciling, but they are still inside the Therapy Box, and Carly is still freaking out. However, considering that Mr. Parper seems satisfied that the mother and daughter finally made up, it can be assumed that he released them shortly after.
  • Noodle Incident: Pam reveals she sold Sam's pet bunny to a science lab, and Sam reveals she told one of Pam's boyfriends that Pam got hit by a bus and died.
  • Oh, Crap!: Sam's reaction when her mom enters Carly's apartment.
  • Parental Favoritism: Pam apparently likes Melanie better, perhaps because she's better-behaved and more responsible, although she admits that deep down, she truly loves Sam.
  • Parental Neglect: Sam says her mother sold her pet bunny when she was younger, doesn't call her parole officer, and didn't bother to pay the water bill, all while Pam is telling Sam to sarcastically "just take a bath".
  • Special Guest: Jane Lynch as Pam Puckett.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Sam causes quite the ruckus when she moves in with the Shays.
  • Unseen No More: Sam's mother appears onscreen for the first time.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: During the 'therapy box' scene, Pam stuffs the lipstick she was putting on into her bra.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: There's one for each story.
    • For the main storyline with Sam's mom, it's Dr. Parper, the therapist who Carly makes Sam and Pam go see to discuss their corroded relationship. He means well, but his last resort methods are quite brutal, such as locking the two against their will inside a small room (that contains a bathroom) and refusing to release them until they reconcile.
    • For Freddie's subplot, it's Gunsmoke, the bodyguard that Marissa hired. He constantly tells Spencer to stay away from Freddie, but his methods of doing so include throwing Spencer to the ground when he mocks him and destroying a snow cone machine that he mistook for a weapon.
  • Womanchild: Carly calls Pam one for not being a responsible adult figure towards Sam.
