Recap / I Carly S 01 Ep 02 I Want More Viewers

Go To

iWant More Viewers is the second episode of the Nick sitcom iCarly. In this episode, the girls and boys compete in Sam's imposed rule that they split up and compete with each other to garner the most ratings for their web show.

Tropes

  • The Bet: The winner's idea will gain more viewers; whoever loses will have to touch Lewbert's wart.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Both plans suffer this
    • Carly and Sam try to get some free advertisement on Seattle Beat by holding a banner publicizing iCarly.com. Unfortunately they forgot it rains frequently in Seattle so the sign gets ruined.
    • Freddie and Spencer put a luminescent billboard over a busy highway. It's not until an accident occurs do they realize that the sign could distract drivers.
  • Flat Joy: Carly proudly announces she made her famous spaghetti - though the main cast give a very weak, insincere "Yay" upon hearing this.
  • Girls vs. Boys Plot: In an effort to drive up viewership, Sam decides to divide the main cast into teams of boys vs girls since she refuses to work with Freddie.
  • Have a Gay Old Time: Spencer puts up an electric board on top of a mountain adjacent to a highway in Seattle that says PLEASE GO ONLINE TO ICARLY.COM, but he cranks up the power too high and most of the letters blow out so that it reads P_E__E __ ON____ __ _CARL____. And then a police officer named Carl handcuffs Spencer thinking it was a sexual attack on him, but does forgive and chooses not to arrest him because he accepts that it wasn't intentional.
  • Humiliation Conga: The main four suffer through this trying to get more viewers for their web show, with Carly and Sam getting wet in the cold rain and their paint-coated sign ruined by the rain before it could even be seen on live-TV. Spencer did boost ratings for the show by putting up a large electric board of neon letters on top of a mountain a la Hollywood but he cranked up the power too high and it blew a fuse, causing some drivers on the Seattle highway to crash from the extreme luminescence and a police officer arresting him for its unintentionally sexual message.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The iCarly crew find Lewbert's behavior of stealing cookies from little kids, angrily screaming at his own tenants and acting hostile towards dogs very repulsive. But apparently they have no problem treating him with hostility.
  • Irony: Lewbert claims he hates dogs, then starts barking like one.
  • I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure: Ms. Briggs punishes Freddie with detention because Spencer refused to leave school property.
  • Misplaced Retribution: When Sam starts insulting Freddie with petty comments and demeaning sarcasm, Freddie starts to fight back and they argue. But Carly seems prompt on punishing not just Sam but also Freddie with a painful water-sprayer equivalent to as if they were cats/dogs, even though Freddie was just defending himself.
  • No Antagonist: The main four have more technical issues than a nemesis to deal with in this episode.
  • Only Sane Man: During dinner, the iCarlys squabble amongst themselves while Spencer stays quiet.
  • Second Episode Introduction: This marks the introduction of the nasty doorman, Lewbert.
  • Signs of Disrepair: Spencer's sign reads "Please go online to iCarly.com". When it shorts out, most of the letters black out to leave "Pee on Carl".
  • Worth It: Sam states so when Carly squirts her for insulting Freddie some more.
