Recap / iCarly (2021) S1E7 "iNeed Space"

Go To

Carly and Harper's search for a better workspace leads them to a private women's club where the leader is charismatic and demanding. Freddie enrolls Millicent in the Sunshine Girls, but she instead mobilizes the kids into workers for her cupcake empire.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Millicent's last name is revealed to be "Mitchell".
  • Animal Motifs: Argentina has a thing for leopards, wearing leopard printed clothing (including giving a leopard print tie to Spencer), and her club is called "LeapIn"note .
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Freddie invokes this. When the girls are commenting on Spencer not changing his clothes, they're commenting on his "Walk of Shame". But since Millicent is there, he covers her ears and escorts her out.
Freddie: Shame we have to leave so soon.
  • Blackmail Backfire: After Carly catches Argentina spying on the girls (and Spencer), Argentina demands that Carly put her on "iCarly" to promote "LeapIn", or else she will delete Harper's "look book" from her flash drive. Carly turns it on Argentina by recording her ranting about how stupid and gullible women really are, demanding Harper's flash drive back or else she'll release the footage. Argentina is left with no choice but to agree.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Argentina Woolridge presents herself as a feminist icon trying to help women get into business, but in reality, she's a Female Misogynist cult leader who mines women's data for profit.
  • Con Man: Or con woman in this case. Argentina sells workspaces for women entrepreneurs, while forcing them to work long hours, spying on them and selling their data to corporations. She says it's more profitable than selling an actual product, nor is it any different than what social media does.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Sunshine Girls appeared in "iOwe You". In this episode, Freddie has Millicent join the group.
    • Carly's claustrophobia, as seen in "iSpace Out" and "iSam's Mom" is alluded to when Argentina shows her the "Femi-nest". She says it began due to an MRI where the technician forgot about her.
  • Extreme Doormat: Spencer admits to still being in love with Argentina even after he finds out she was using him to get closer to Carly. He offers her his green juice and says he's fine with her continuing to spy on him.
  • Female Misogynist: Argentina. She refers to Carly as a "little bitch" and Carly records her ranting about how women are stupid and easy to manipulate. Carly even refers to her as a "woman-hating fraud".
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: After joining LeapIn, Harper is relieved that her apartment will no longer be a mess. When she and Carly enter, Spencer and Freddie are baking lots and lots of cupcakes for Millicent's Minions.
  • Karma Houdini: Argentina isn't exposed for her actions, as Carly deleted the footage she recorded so that Harper would get her flash drive back. Though as Argentina herself points out, she's effectively no worse than any other platform that sells information, and her customers agreed to the terms (even though nobody actually reads those), so she's not technically breaking any laws. Even Toji is completely okay with being targeted for ads, as it has helped her find awesome products. Carly is forced to accept it and merely wishes that women didn't have to pay to be part of a community.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Carly and Harper contemplate doing a miniseries exposing Argentina. "Ten episodes. Maybe even a second season." Shortly after this episode aired, it was announced that iCarly (2021) had been renewed for a ten-episode second season, though it was originally meant to feature thirteen episodes like season one.
  • Prone to Tears: Carly's friend Toji cries frequently. Her tearfully begging Carly not to "leap in" is what tips Carly off about the darker side of LeapIn. Harper brushes it off because Toji "cried when popsicle was over". She also cries every time she enters the Femi-nest. Though it turns out that Toji loves the club, claiming that she's just an emotional person, doesn't mind having her data tracked and the reason she told Carly not to leap in is because Toji had a free guest pass for her (Argentina interrupted Toji before she could finish the sentence.)
  • Series Continuity Error: This episode takes place in February (Harper says it's Black History Month) whereas the previous episode took place in July. It could be explained as a Time Skip, the episodes being aired Out of Order, Anachronic Order or just a plain old writing slip. Writer Franchesca Ramsey explains that "since February is the shortest month of the year, you have permission to use this saying year round." Therefore, this episode may not have taken place in February.
  • Scout-Out: Freddie places Millicent into the Sunshine Girls. However, after learning that she doesn't profit from the fudge balls she sells, she quits and starts her own cupcake-selling business, with full support from Freddie. Unfortunately, Freddie becomes too overbearing and is promptly kicked out.
  • Smug Snake: Argentina, who barely hides her shifty nature behind thin viener of claiming to support women but is really a Female Misogynist using ads to take advantage of other women's insecurities to make a profit, a scheme Carly is underwhelmed by and refers to as "basic". In the end, Carly tricks her into admitting her whole scheme (as well as calling women gullible idiots) on camera, forcing her to give Harper back her flash drive in order to save face.
  • T-Word Euphemism: Freddie is thrilled that Millicent finally called him the "D-word."
    Harper: Dumbass?
    Freddie: No, Dad.
