Kellerman, P.I.: Part 1

Directed By: Kenneth Fink
Story By: Julie Martin and James Yoshimura
Teleplay By: Joy Lusco

Falsone and Stivers get the case of a dead baby found buried outside a motel, which leads them to Craig (Chris Gunn) and Debbie (Jena Malone), a teenage couple who had the baby. It also puts them in conflict with Mike Kellerman, who's now working as a private investigator and has been hired by Debbie's parents. Elsewhere, Ballard and Falsone are now a couple.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Kellerman thanks Lewis for not giving him his gun while they were in the box.
  • Death of a Child: The baby of Craig and Debbie. They claim the baby was still born, but Dr. Griscom tells Falsone and Stivers it was murder because the baby had drawn breath.
  • Gut Feeling: Falsone is convinced Debbie is the one who killed the baby because she referred to the baby as "it", whereas Craig referred to the baby as "he."
  • Persona Non Grata: Kellerman is treated like this as everyone in Homicide wants nothing to do with him (except Shepherd, who wasn't there and treats him like an old friend), and Giardello tells Falsone and Stivers not to give him any information on the case.
  • Recovered Addict: Kellerman has stopped drinking like he used to, which he tells Lewis happened after falling off one too many bar stools.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: Kellerman tells Debbie's parents not to post bail for her after the arraignment (Craig's mother can't afford to), figuring that spending the night in jail will make Debbie realize the charge is serious. It works.
  • Title Drop: After they see Kellerman, and Munch talks about how Kellerman is now a private investigator, Bayliss says, "Kellerman, P.I."
