Recap / Homicide Life On The Street S 5 E 5 ME Myself And I

Go To

M.E., Myself and I

Directed By: Michael Fields
Story By: Tom Fontana
Teleplay By: Lyle Weldon and Emily Whitesell

Dr. Julianna Cox (Michelle Forbes) comes to take over as chief Medical Examiner for the Homicide Unit, and immediately clashes with Detective Higby and one of her staff members about the murder of a prostitute that they chose to downplay but which ties in to a case Bayliss and Lewis have. FBI agent Thomas Pandolfi (Edward Herrmann) comes to the Homicide Unit to interrogate members of the squad about Kellerman's past in the Arson Unit. Elsewhere, Pembleton wants to forgo his medicine for one day so he can properly celebrate his anniversary with his wife, and Brodie cooks for Lewis and his wife, but ends up doing more harm that good to their marriage.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bar Brawl: Kellerman nearly gets into one with Detective Bob Connelly (Cleo Reginald Pizana), who worked with him in the Arson Unit, until cooler heads prevail.
  • Berserk Button: Lewis really does not like it when anyone criticizes Teddy Pendergrass, even a painting of Pendergrass that he has. The fact Barbara does so makes their already fragile marriage go even worse.
  • Blatant Lies: When Higby tries to brush off the murder of the prostitute that he put down as an overdose, saying no one cares about a prostitute, Dr. Cox claims she used to be one. When Bayliss tracks her down afterwards, she admits she lied, but did so because she was pissed off by Higby's moralistic attitude.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with Dr. Cox driving on the highway.
  • Call-Back: When Agent Pandolfini is interviewing Howard, Lewis, and then Giardello about Kellerman, he brings up Kellerman and Lewis lost a suspect who ended up murdering someone, Crosetti killing himself without anyone being aware he was suicidal, and the hot VCR Kellerman got from Arson.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Dr. Cox is first seen speeding on the highway as she drives to Baltimore, so she gets pulled over. She admits to Bayliss later driving fast is one of the ways she deals with the stresses of the job.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Kellerman does this after Howard and Lewis refuse to tell him what they said to Pandolfini.
  • Hospital Hottie: Scheiner seems to think Dr. Cox is this - he calls her "a pain in the ass", but admits she's easy on the eyes.
  • Ma'am Shock: When the motorcycle cop who pulls Dr. Cox over calls her "ma'am", she tells him to look at the birth date on her driver's license, and adds, "Do I look like a 'ma'am' to you?"
  • Pet the Dog: Pembleton's doctor agrees to let him go off his meds for one day so he and his wife can celebrate their anniversary, but warns him he has to go right back on.
  • The Reveal: The body Dr. Cox is waiting for the funeral home to pick up is her father's.
  • Ship Tease: The episode has a rather flirtatious dynamic between Bayliss and Dr. Cox, although she'll end up paired with a different detective and the romance would not be revisited until mid-S6.
  • Smug Snake: Higby and the medical examiner are both this when asked why they made the cause of death on the prostitute an overdoes when it was really a strangulation. The public defender (who happens to be the ex-boyfriend of Danvers' fiancĂ©e) is like this too.
  • Supreme Chef: Brodie turns out to be this - Lewis and Barbara both think the chili he made is superb. Unfortunately, this turns out to be the only thing they agree on.
  • Titled After the Song: The song "Me, Myself and I" by De La Soul.
