Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 2 E 12 Lovers Quarrel

Go To

Darkseid agrees to give Psycho the world if he brings him the head of Harley Quinn, so Psycho controls Ivy to set her against Harley.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion:
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Batman goes straight past guns and goes for explosive batarangs when killing Parademons. Seems the 'Batman never kills' rule only applies to humans.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Both Harley and Batman lampshade at how Clayface Took a Level in Badass.
  • Big Brother Bully: King Shark, as a child, picked on his younger, smaller brother much to the chagrin of their father. When the younger shark cuts himself, King's bloodlust kicks in. It's played for Black Comedy, but it's obvious why he doesn't want others to see this memory.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Kite Man saves Harley from being killed by Ivy.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Dr. Psycho is beaten and sent to Arkham, and Darkseid leaves Earth. In response to his defeat, Psycho shows all of Gotham that Harley and Poison Ivy were having an affair, just to spite them. Kite Man is devastated to learn that Ivy went behind his back like that, and she is unable to say anything back.
  • Brain Uploading: Sy's consciousness is stored in his cybernetic eye. He then upgrades to a stand mixer so he can help Kite Man finish the mind control blocker.
  • Bystander Syndrome: When a mind-controlled Ivy attacks Harley at Bethany's house, Joker doesn't bother to help Harley and then asks Bethany if she's craving Thai or Italian food while Ivy attacks Harley in the background. That said, he seems to think they are both enjoying it. This poses a few questions about Bethany, but anyways.
  • Cain and Abel: King Shark's worst memory is of killing his younger brother, to the surprise of Psycho who was just expecting to expose something humiliating.
  • Call-Back:
    • To Harley's overcompensating by insisting she's impetuous and kisses everybody at random. She says this again to cover up making a Freudian Slip and then kisses electronic-Sy. Like Batgirl, Kite-Man responds with, "What is happening?"
    • To King Shark's blood frenzy.
      • Harley accidentally makes Wonder Woman cut her own cheek with her sword, and the bleeding sets King Shark off.
      • A flashback reveals that when his younger brother's knee got scraped and bled, King Shark soon became an only child.
  • Car Fu: Ivy throws cars at the heroes with her monster-sized plant.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A vial of Ivy's pheromones that she carries with her, as revealed back in the second episode, comes into play again.
  • Cliffhanger: After Psycho finishes broadcasting Harley and Ivy's affair to all of Gotham and passes out, the episode ends with Kite Man left just silently staring at them in betrayal, at which they can't say anything back.
    • On a lighter note, the three heroes are likely to need the antidote lest they turn into trees and/or before Bats and Wondy face an awkward morning after.
  • Combat Tentacles: Ivy wields some plant vines wrapped around her and forming four tentacles which she fights with.
  • The Comically Serious:
    • Darkseid fullstop. In one scene he's threatening Dr. Psycho with death if he doesn't deliver Harley Quinn's head. In the next Dr. Psycho is giving him a tour of the mall, telling him about all the goods and services he can buy there, and then Darkseid asks who Orange Julius is, not knowing it's a drink.
      • Poison Ivy tells Dr. Psycho to "S- my V-" and Darkseid quizzically repeats the phrase.
      • After Harley Quinn turns down Darkseid's offer to command his Parademon armies, he promises to return and turn the Earth into a scrap yard. Poison Ivy nervously tells him to get back into his boom tube. What does Darkseid do? Say, "Darkseid is... leaving," and then he leaves.
    • Batman offhandedly mentions that Bruce Wayne's property insurance won't cover damages to Wayne Tower by meta-humans, then hastily adds that the reason he knows this is because Wayne's a close personal friend. Cue an eye-roll from Wonder Woman.
    • Superman is a little miffed after Wonder Woman lassos a Parademon with her Lasso of Truth, asks it where Dr Psycho is, and then looks at Superman expectantly when she can't understand its shrieks. Superman says that they shouldn't expect him to know what every alien says just because he himself is an alien. He then admits he does know some Parademon but claims it's still a racist assumption on her part and admonishes her to do better. Cue (the first) Wonder Woman eye-roll.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Lampshaded by Harley regarding various things that have previously happened to them, when Clayface grows to giant size and she asks why he didn't do this before.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: When Dr. Psycho broadcast Harley and Ivy having sex to Gotham, Gordon covers Barbara's eyes while Barbara covers Gordon's eyes.
  • Covert Pervert: Alfred closes the curtains at Wayne Manor when Dr. Psycho broadcasts Harley and Ivy having sex to all of Gotham but peeks his head through the curtain to keep watching.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • The Justice League easily defeats the Parademon army.
    • Poison Ivy, King Shark, and Clayface do marginally better but are ultimately no match for Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman respectively.
    • Once they're immune to his mind control, Harley and Ivy beat Dr. Psycho in moments.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Superman explains they're not going to kill Ivy, they're just going to send her to the Phantom Zone where she'll "rest forever".
  • Dirty Old Man: Alfred continuing to look at Harley and Ivy's sex broadcast pretty much covers it.
  • Everyone Can See It: Bane had a feeling there was something going on between Harley and Ivy.
    Bane: The tension was palpable.
  • Everyone Knows Morse Code: Sy's bionic eye flashes a message in Morse, which Kite Man is able to understand.
  • Evil Is Petty: Dr. Psycho broadcasts Harley and Ivy having sex to all of Gotham for no other reason than he was pissed for losing.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Directly invoked by Psycho when Harley's kiss is enough to distract his control of Ivy.
    • Pretty much how everyone reacts to Psycho's broadcast of Ivy's memories of having sex with Harley.
    • Notably averted with Kite Man, who does not find it hot that his fiancée hooked up with another girl and is quite distraught over it.
  • Instant Expert: Harley is able to use one of Kite Man's spare kites effortlessly with no prior training.
  • Internal Reveal: Dr. Psycho learns about Harley and Ivy's drunken romp in the sheets by reading Ivy's mind, then shares the memory with the rest of Gotham by using his powers to display it on a giant screen in the sky.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Superman tries a pun with some bystanders who are recording him and Ivy fighting, saying that Ivy hasn't "hedged her bets". They aren't that impressed.
  • Love Potion: Dr. Psycho uses Ivy to unleash her love pheromone on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, causing them to become infatuated with each other and too distracted to oppose him.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Fans who enjoyed the Ship Tease of Batman and Wonder Woman back in the Justice League series and are disappointed in how it's never been followed up since, are given a (silly) taste of more of it.
    • Batman attempts to fight King Shark with the shark repellent spray again.
    • Like in previous films, Wonder Woman gets a car thrown at her, but she doesn't manage to dodge it this time around.
    • Batman stops Clayface by freezing him.
  • No-Sell: King Shark bites Superman, who treats it as an annoyance as the bite doesn't draw any blood.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Harley is very squicked out seeing Batman and Wonder Woman start coming on to each other and when Superman tries hitting on her after they're all exposed to Ivy's super-potent love pheromones.
  • Old Shame: In-Universe. King Shark doesn't like to remember that when he was a kid, he entered a blood frenzy and ate his younger sibling.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Darkseid is featured heavily in this episode. But aside from threatening Dr. Psycho a few times, he just stands around. In the end, Harley pisses him off by turning down his second offer to take command over his Parademon armies so that she can conquer and rule the Earth under him. While he vows to turn the Earth into a scrap yard, he just leaves even though he could have done what he threatened on the spot.
  • Pec Flex: Superman does this under the effects of Ivy's pheromones.
  • Pink Is Erotic: When Ivy's pheromones make Batman and Wonder Woman sexually attracted to each other, Batman's hallucination shows Wonder Woman in a pink filter, with a Sexophone riff and slight Hair Flip included.
  • Revisiting the Roots: Under Dr. Psycho's control both Clayface and King Shark behave and fight like their original selves from the comics and other animations. Psycho from the series' start was nearly as much a misogynistic pervert as in the comics, just not a psychopathic Serial Killer here. Now he's back to his comic roots almost full bore.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In a Blink-And-You-Miss-It-Moment, Riddler quickly ditches Psycho when Harley breaks Ivy free of Psycho's mind-control.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Smoking Hot Sex: Psycho declares that he needs a cigarette after displaying Harley and Ivy's sex scene for all to see.
  • Something Person: Kite Man mentions knowing a “Soldering Man” in Milwaukee.
  • Stereotype Reaction Gag: Wonder Woman turns to Superman when she needs help translating Parademon. Superman is offended at the assumption that he can understand all aliens just because he is one. It turns out he can understand Parademon.
Superman: It's still a racist assumption. Be better.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Harley spends the episode pretty much yelling that point about everyone else around her. Also, Wonder Woman repeatedly rolls her eyes at both Batman and Superman's behaviors.
  • Take That!:
  • Technology Marches On (In-Universe):
    • The device that gave Sy Borgman his immunity to Dr. Psycho's mind control was built decades ago. While it used components that were commonplace back in his days as a CIA agent, those are obsolete items that almost nobody uses in the present day. So replicating the device is an issue.
    • Electronic Sy's initial plan requires a floppy disk, a VHS tape, and an 8-track recording of a Monkees song. Harley quickly points out the impracticality of obtaining these items in the present.
  • Tempting Fate: Dr. Psycho at one point boasts he is the most powerful being on Earth. Then Darkseid shows up.
  • Thanks for the Mammary: Kite Man rescues Harley from Ivy at the beginning, and only realizes after about 30 seconds of flight that he has his hand on one of her breasts - after she points it out.
  • Third-Person Person: Darkseid often refers to himself this way. Batman does it when he offhandedly mentions that Bruce Wayne's property insurance won't cover damage sustained during a meta-human battle.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Clayface, normally a flamboyant Comic Relief character, turns into a rampaging giant under the control of Psycho, much to Harley's annoyance seeing as he wastes so much potential when he isn't brainwashed.
  • The Tooth Hurts: At the end of his fight with Wonder Woman, King Shark fakes are knocked out to attempt to bite her arm off. He ends up biting into her unbreakable bracelets, breaking his front teeth.
  • Toplessness from the Back: When Psycho broadcasts Ivy and Harley having sex for the whole city to see, we get a close view of Ivy from behind as her bra gets removed, then the shots cut away to show everyone else's reactions to their sex scene.
  • True Love's Kiss: Subverted. Kite Man tries doing this to Ivy to break the mind control, but it doesn't work and Ivy just smacks him away. Harley tries it on Ivy and it seems like it worked, but in reality, Psycho just lost focus because Girl on Girl Is Hot, and Harley is able to put the earpiece on Ivy to block Psycho's mind control before he can recover.
  • Understatement:
    • King Shark's reaction to watching a broadcast of Harley and Ivy having sex.
King Shark: Oh, this is gonna affect the crew dynamic in a messy and complicated manner.
    • When Ivy's about to be sent to the Phantom Zone and then Harley begs to be sent along with her, Superman casually agrees.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Darkseid leaves after Dr. Psycho is defeated and Harley refuses his offer to conquer Earth. He vows to return one day.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The heroes have no problem massacring the Parademons, even though they're intelligent and Superman speaks their language. Meanwhile, they only planned to put Poison Ivy in the Phantom Zone, despite being an incredibly dangerous individual they acknowledge could kill thousands under Psycho's control; then again, they realize she's not herself at the moment, and keeping her in an inescapable prison is certainly the best option until they can break the mind control.
  • Willfully Weak: Harley is very irritated to learn Clayface has been sitting on the ability to turn into a superstrong giant in favor of only using his abilities to enhance his acting.
  • You Are Worth Hell: When Superman announces his plan to imprison Poison Ivy in the Phantom Zone, Harley begs him to put her in it as well.
