Recap / Half Life Residue Processing

Go To

"Where we taking this Freeman guy? "
"Topside for questioning."
"What the hell for? We got 'im. Let's kill him now!"
"And if they find the body?"
"Body? What body?"

Stripped of his weapons, Gordon starts the chapter being unceremoniously dropped into a trash compactor by the Marines that captured him. He manages to wake up and escape before being crushed, and stumbles across the entrance to Black Mesa's Residue Processing facility. Said facility is presumably being used by the HECU to dispose of the dead, judging by the entrails being fed into the processing machinery. Making his way through the facility, Gordon manages to minimally rearm himself (just the crowbar and pistol for most of the chapter).

This Chapter contains examples of:

  • Bond Villain Stupidity: The HECU marines don't bother to make sure Gordon really dies, even though they have him at their mercy.
  • Breather Episode: Not much combat, mostly platforming around hazardous machinery and waste.
  • Door to Before: Unlockable doors signify progress.
  • Drought Level of Doom: This chapter starts with the player getting stripped of all the weapons and, although several of the weapons can be reacquired in this chapter, ammo for them is very scarce.
  • Genre Refugee: A Nintendo Hard platforming stage full of underwater swimming and timed death traps. Made easier thanks to the games Save Scumming.
  • No-Gear Level: You're stripped of your weapons, and work your way back up from the crowbar.
  • No OSHA Compliance: It's like a lethal water park, basically though you do at least need to violate common sense like with playing on the conveyor belts.
  • Sequence Breaking: It's possible to break the surviving security guard's scripted event by quickly running over to him, and talking to him before he runs off and gets eaten by a Barnacle. However, you miss out on obtaining the regular pistol for the level as the only one is from the guard. Unless of course you decide to kill the guard afterwards.
  • Toxic, Inc.: A waste disposal plant that's in line with Black Mesa's bad safety model.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: The trash compactor.
  • When All Else Fails, Go Right: The level is navigated by traveling through dangerous machinery due to the doors being locked.
