"Absence makes the heart grow fonder."

Airdate: November 6, 2006

Disco Bear needs a transplant, but Doctor Lumpy has trouble finding a donor.

"A Change of Heart" contain examples of:

  • Ambiguous Ending: Lumpy suffers a heart attack while eating a sandwich and his fate is left unknown.
  • Artistic License: Disco Bear is able to deep fry a stick of butter without even breading it. In real life, the butter would've melted in the deep fryer.
  • Body Horror: Disco Bear's heart being replaced with the one of a whale. (Pictured)
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Giggles is forced to manually pump air into Disco Bear's heart to the point she almost dies of exhaustion and Lumpy still forces her to work after he revives her!
    • Handy is the only character to die in this episode.
    • Disco Bear suffers a Mutilation Conga through out this episode because of Lumpy's clumsy treatment.note  Not to mention, Disco Bear is now immobilized from the whale heart Lumpy gave him, as the moose ate the heart he was supposed to surgically implant.
  • Deep-Fried Whatever: Disco Bear eats a deep-fried block of butter, which leads to his heart attack.
  • The Determinator:
    • Both Lumpy and Giggles go to great lengths to make sure that Disco Bear stays alive.
    • Even when suffering from a heart attack, Lumpy stomachs it in and continues to eat his sandwich.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The title of this episode means to completely change your personality and thoughts but also references the fact that Disco Bear needs a new heart in this episode.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Disco Bear clutches his chest and dances around the room before dramatically falling over unconscious.
  • Late to the Realisation: Petunia merely rolls her eyes at Disco Bear's over-the-top reaction to his heart attack... until he starts drooling and doesn't get up from the floor.
  • Lighter and Softer: This episode barely features any deaths in it and is light on gore. In fact, it's the only non-Everybody Lives episode to have the highest number of characters and the lowest number of deaths. note
  • Mad Doctor: Lumpy definitely qualifies this after replacing Disco Bear's ruined heart with a massive whale heart.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands:
    • Lumpy and Giggles are surgeons.
    • Petunia is a waitress.
  • Noodle Incident: Just what the hell happened between Handy and that whale? The only bit of context shown is a crashed airplane hitting the whale in the middle of the park and Handy somehow having his heart exposed.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: The food that Disco Bear eats at the start of the episode is standard bacon and eggs with a side of chicken drumsticks, which is a normal if still fairly unhealthy meal. This trope comes into play, however, when Disco Bear consumes a stick of deep-fried butter.
  • Pet the Dog: While they obviously still hate Disco Bear, both Petunia and especially Giggles were actually worried about him once he had a heart attack.
  • Running Gag: Lumpy eating sandwiches.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Handy dies in this episode (and Lumpy might count as well, since he gets a heart attack himself at the end of the episode).
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Everyone except Handy survives this episode (except maybe Lumpy).
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Lumpy noticeably acts more cruel towards Giggles this episode, forcing her to work to the point where she passes out from exhaustion. Granted, most of that cruelty was due to the stress of keeping Disco Bear alive.
