'S Wonderful, 'S Marvelous

Lorelai is dating Christopher. Luke is going to have April living with him while Anna is in Arizona. Sookie thinks it's not right to use your baby daddy as a rebound. She makes pumpkin foods for Halloween. Richard got a position as a visiting lecturer at Yale, inspiring Rory to take an economics class just to see him.

Emily gets pulled over for talking on her phone and arrested for drunk driving. Rory visits an art exhibition where she meets Lucy and Andrea for the first time. April tries to set Luke up with her biology teacher.

Tropes

  • Bookworm: April enjoys reading her biology textbook.
  • Call-Back: Once again, Lorelai has to stop a date to go get a relative out of prison.
  • Captain Obvious:
    • Luke explains to April how the call waiting function on his telephone works. Kind of common knowledge back when landlines were common.
    • Paris claims that compared to the Courant, the Yale Daily News is a joke. When asked what her point is, she says it is that compared to the Courant, the Yale Daily News is a joke.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Lorelai complains that Snakes on a Plane is all about snakes – on a plane. Claiming that "Dances With Wolves isn't all about dancing wolves, and Driving Miss Daisy doesn't take place in a car". No, but those movies were about a woman named Daisy and a man named Dances With Wolves.
    • Luke thinks the reason for the list of things kids aren't allowed to bring to school is that they are bringing those things, rather than as a precaution.
    • Gigi's mantra for meditation is "shh".
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Emily thinks laws about stuff you can do while driving a car are pretty pointless.
  • May–December Romance: Discussed. Lorelai thinks the movie was nice even if Audrey Hepburn was "like, twenty" and Fred Astaire was "like, eighty".
  • Mind Screw: Christopher thinks the reason movies he and Lorelai watch are bad is that he and Lorelai are watching them.
  • My Beloved Smother: Kirk has two: his mother, and Lulu.
  • Picky Eater: Lorelai will only eat orange food if it is naturally orange.
  • Product Placement: Twizzlers. Target. An air popper. Possibly rice. Popcorn.
  • Pun: Anna says they're late because they forgot April's avocado pit, and April remarks that they made a pit-stop.
  • Shout-Out
    • The episode title is a reference to the song 'S Wonderful from Funny Face.
    • Lorelai and Chris went to see Snakes on a Plane.
    • She claims that Driving Miss Daisy didn't all take place in a car.
    • Dances with Wolves wasn't one long wolf dance.
    • Lorelai refuses to see Casablanca with Chris in case he ruins it for her.
    • Teletubbies
    • Lorelai wants to consult Emily Post about how to treat her baby daddy ex who she is dating again for the third time since they were teens.
    • Miss Patty's senior ballet class got in a fight at an audition for The Nutcracker.
    • Miss Patty thinks April looks like Anna Pavlova.
    • Paris claims hers and Doyle's relationship is like the one between Nora Ephron and Carl Bernstein.
    • Chris takes Lorelai for a private showing of Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
    • Lorelai wants to know if Emily fresh out of DUI jail would like to hear Jailhouse Rock, Folsom Prison Blues, or We're working on a chain gang.
    • Lucy complains about a guy who told her girls can't play Oscar Wilde.
  • Take That!: Compared to the Courant newsroom, the Yale Daily News newsroom is a joke, or so Paris gloats.
  • The Talk: Lorelai thinks it would be weird for her daughter to give her this about dating her father.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Luke worries that the list of things April's school gives him over things you can't bring to school implies this trope.
  • Title Drop: Split in two: Lorelai says dating is marvelous; Richard later says it's wonderful that he will be lecturing at Yale.
