Recap / Friends S 8 E 12 The One Where Joey Dates Rachel

Go To

Rachel misses going out on dates, so Joey takes her out as a friend, but it causes him to start having deep feelings for her. Phoebe gives Monica and Chandler a Ms. Pac-Man machine as a late wedding present and all three get addicted to the game. Ross gets to teach an advanced class, but it's on the other side of the city and he tires himself out traveling from place to place.

Tropes:

  • …But He Sounds Handsome: While roleplaying being Rachel's date, Joey comments on how her "roommate" sounds like a handsome, stand-up guy. He's less amused when Rachel jokes that she thinks her "roommate" might be gay.
  • Cluster Bleep-Bomb: Phoebe goes into a long profanity-laden tirade after losing at Ms. Pac-Man. Classical music covers up her tirade.
  • Continuity Nod: Joey persuades Rachel to watch Cujo. He'd previously been established as a Stephen King fan when he got Rachel to read The Shining.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Ross immediately covers Ben's ears when they walk in on Phoebe spouting off a long string of profanities.
  • Double Meaning: Joey says he's "...Terrified" when Rachel asks him whether he isn't scared of a horror movie they're watching. He is really talking about his realization that he is falling in love with her.
  • Face Palm: Monica face-palms when Ross comes in with Ben while Phoebe is cursing out the game.
  • Fingore: After a day of playing Ms. Pac-Man, Chandler's fingers cramp up in a tangled mess that he starts referring to as "The Claw".
  • I'll Take Two Beers Too: When Rachel orders fillet mignon and lobster, Joey orders those two same items as well.
  • Intimacy Via Horror: Rachel wants Joey to sit with her while watching Cujo and cuddles with him in fear. Joey isn't paying much attention to the movie as he feels conflicted about his growing feelings for Rachel.
  • Wacky Cravings: Rachel wants both fillet mignon and lobster (to the consternation of the waitress) at the restaurant Joey takes her to.
