Recap / Friends S 8 E 13 The One Where Chandler Takes A Bath

Go To

Joey wants to tell someone about his feelings for Rachel. Ross and Rachel discuss what to name their upcoming child. Monica convinces Chandler to take a relaxing bath.

Tropes:

  • Bathtub Scene: Chandler's plot is Monica getting him to have a bathtub bath with salts and candles. He resists because it's too girly, but eventually relents, although he brings a toy boat along to make it manlier.
  • Bookends: The episode begins and ends with Joey reassuring himself that his crush on Rachel will get over soon, while he is eating his cereal.
  • Call-Back:
    • While awkwardly trying to get advice about his feelings for Rachel, Joey alludes to how Chandler and Monica hooked up while in London.
    • Ross again tries to avoid learning the sex of his child, but things go wrong (albeit this time, he blows the secret for Rachel instead of the other way around).
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Thinking that Joey likes Phoebe, Monica reveals it to her almost immediately.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Ross and Rachel's assorted picks are considered this by each other for various reasons. They both ultimately agree on "Ruth" being this, out of concern for the inevitable pun about the candy.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Monica figures out that it's Rachel that Joey has a secret crush on.
  • Group Hug: The gang do this after Ross and Rachel announce they're having a girl. Chandler, who's still in the bath, says he'll catch up later once he's dry.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: Chandler uses a toy boat to cover up his genitals when the Censor Suds prove inadequate.
  • Hippie Name: Ross rejects "Rain" as a baby name because it sounds too hippie-ish; Granola Girl Phoebe responds positively to it.
Ross: Rain? "Hi, my name is Rain. I have my own kiln, and my dress is made out of wheat."
Phoebe: I know her! I bought a homemade soap from her at a Dead show.
    • Later in the episode Ross throws out "Sequoia" as an example of the ridiculous names Rachel would go for, and she briefly considers using it before he vetoes it.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Rachel being dismissive of Ross's first choice for a name (Darwin) prompts Phoebe to point out what her first pick was.
Rachel: Our child will be beaten to death in the schoolyard.
      Phoebe: By Sandrene.
    • When chastising her for trying to sneak a look at the doctor's file, Ross lectures Rachel about self-control. A couple months pregnant as a result of a one night stand with him, Rachel questions him saying that.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: The episode is book-ended by Joey thinking to himself about how his crush with Rachel doesn't really mean anything, only to immediately contradict himself when she walks by.
  • Interrupted Bath: Chandler keeps getting interrupted from his attempts at taking a bath.
  • Noodle Incident: Joey was once in a production of Macbeth. According to Chandler and Monica, his difficulty speaking Shakespearian dialogue made for a very long night.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Monica thinks Joey is in love with Phoebe, when he's actually in love with Rachel. So after Phoebe is told this and talks to Joey...
Phoebe: Look, Joey, I know about your feelings.
    Joey: Oh, you do?
Phoebe: Yeah, and I don't think it could happen.
Joey: I know. I mean it's Rachel. Not just my friend Rachel, it's my pregnant-with-Ross'-child friend Rachel.
Phoebe: Ohh… Yeah, Rachel. I mean, you two are friends. [under her breath] Beat me over the head with it, why don't you.
    Joey: What?
    Phoebe: Nothing.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Chandler realizing something is wrong when Joey comes over and doesn't ask about food.
  • The Reveal: Ross and Rachel are going to have a baby girl.
  • Shout-Out: Since Chandler does take to the bath, Monica suggests he try facials next.
  • Verbal Backspace: Upon seeing that Rachel didn't know they were having a girl, Ross desperately tries to walk back what he just said.
  • Wham Line: "Oh, c'mon, you know it's a girl."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Ross chastises Rachel for trying to sneak a look at the file and learn the sex of the baby.
Ross: Shame on you! Ugly baby judges you!
