Recap / Friends S 7 E 17 The One With The Cheap Wedding Dress

Go To

Monica picks up her wedding dress with Rachel and Phoebe, but faces some fierce competition in the form of Megan, who blackmails her by booking the swing band Chandler wants to play at their wedding. Ross and Joey meet a new girl, Kristen, and start dating her, unaware of each other's interest in her.

Tropes:

  • Big Eater: The caterer gave Monica a list of 12 appetizers, and she struggles to narrow it down to six. Joey offers to help, only to end up adding three items to the list.
  • Blatant Lies: Joey and Ross on their date with Kristen claim they don't know each other despite giving specific embarrassing stories. It gets to the point that Kristen doesn't care what's true and what's not and bails.
  • Bridezilla: Rachel and Phoebe might as well be in the army, given how ferocious and methodical Monica is about picking up her wedding dress on sale. Not without reason as the other brides-to-be shopping for dresses prove themselves vicious, especially Megan who goes as far as using blackmail. It's also noted that she gave Chandler just one job for the wedding: stay out of the way.
  • Call-Back: Ross and Joey try to embarrass each other in front of Kristen by bringing up past events from across the series, such as Ross owning Marcel the monkey and Joey being a poster guy for VD awareness.
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: Monica's dream wedding dress has a fitted bodice and poofy skirt that fit the bill. She eventually gives it up to Megan in exchange for the wedding band Chandler wants.
  • The Gadfly: Upon realizing that Ross and Joey are interested in Kristen, an amused Chandler prods them about the situation. After he gets them both to realize they're both competing for the same woman, he happily leaves them to deal with the fallout.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Before his date, Ross gave himself a facial because of his oily T-zone. Joey ends up asking advice about how to do it. In the end credit scene, they're trying it out along with Chandler.
  • Loophole Abuse: Ross and Joey had agreed to a $100 spending limit for their dates with Kristen. Ross sends Kristen flowers worth that much, but since their date hasn't happened yet, he insists that's not actually breaking the limit. Joey is displeased and retaliates by crashing the date with embarrassing stories.
  • Noodle Incident: Chandler and Monica once went to a show by the Swing Kings, and Chandler wants them as the band for the wedding because it was when he was dancing to one of their songs that he first realised Monica was the person he wanted to dance all his dances with.
  • Retail Riot: Monica tries to save money for her wedding by getting her dress from an outlet warehouse. Lots of women show up and when the doors open it's a pretty aggressive situation. Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe bring whistles so they can find each other.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After repeatedly bringing up embarrassing stories, Ross and Joey notice that Kristen has left the table.
  • Series Continuity Error: Chandler's Barcalounger is still around despite getting totalled 4 episodes ago. This episode was actually meant to have aired before that.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Done by Ross when Joey interrupts his date with Kristen.
Kristin: Ross, this is Joey, Joey, Ross.
    Joey: Hi.
Ross: Hi, it's nice to meet you. I used to have a friend named Joey. I don't anymore.
